About the Position:

With evidence of relevant continuing professional development/training in the field of mental health/therapeutic interventions, you'll be responsible for developing a counselling service facing increasing demand, through excellent management; working to develop systems and processes, safeguarding, and providing expertise in clinical issues.

The post holder, in collaboration with the Welfare/Mental Health teams, Learning Support team and Student Relations Manager, will contribute to the delivery and development of a range of services including individual and group work and provision of a professional advisory service for staff and students, internal or external referrals, and curation of psycho-educational or self-help resources.

This role would be a great fit if you’ve a working knowledge of the specific concerns currently facing HE Institutions and their students, and an understanding of the SEND Code of Practice 2015.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor the provision of counselling to ensure all students work within their competencies, in accordance with BACP guidelines
  • Hold clinical responsibility for all client work
  • To oversee & report on the provision of clinical assessments of
  • clients and/or making suitable and timely referrals out
  • To supervise & monitor the allocation of new referrals to staff in line with their current caseload numbers
  • To ensure team use of systems in accordance with approved service policies and procedures,
  • To take responsibility for team recruitment, probation, performance & development review, and clinical performance
  • To take responsibility for embedding Counsellors into QAHE and preparing reports as required
  • To contribute to the development of policies, procedures and practices, under the direction of the Head of Welfare to improve service provision
  • To manage a small caseload of the more complex clients and assist the Head of Welfare with complex decisions relating to the mental health of a student, plus Safeguarding
  • To promote the counselling and mental health service
  • To supervise arrangements for any associate counsellors/student placements
  • To propose individual/team professional development and supervision needs
  • Ensure that any serious concerns about students/disciplinary matters are raised to the Head of Welfare

What We'll Do For You!

About You:

Being someone with excellent communication skills and the ability to engage and motivate students, you’ll also need to have the following essential experience:

  • Supporting clients with complex mental health difficulties in a multi-agency context
  • Conducting counselling/mental health assessments, including assessment of risk
  • Working with people with complex difficulties in a relevant context
  • Responding proactively to people experiencing crisis
  • Working within a higher educational or other complex organisational context
  • Coordinating the casework of a team
  • Experience of developing or contributing to professional networks/policy development
  • Line management experience
  • Experience of delivering group interventions
  • Ability to offer a variety of therapeutic approaches to working with clients
  • Working knowledge of the specific concerns currently facing HE Institutions and their students
  • Ability to motivate, lead and work as part of a team
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with external agencies
  • Ability to manage competing priorities
  • Ability to use IT to underpin work.
  • Meet and exceed relevant professional code of conduct in all areas of work

Essential Qualifications:

  • Qualification in clinical supervision and post qualification status as a counsellor, or psychotherapist.
  • Accreditation/registration as a counsellor, or psychotherapist and supervisor with BACP/UKCP/BPS or equivalent
  • Relevant professional, postgraduate qualifications in the field of counselling or mental health e.g. CPN, Counselling Psychologist
