West Northamptonshire Council is a dynamic and progressive new unitary local authority, created in April 2021. The Revenues and Benefits service is one of the largest customer services of the Council comprising of the administration and operation of the Council Tax, Business Rates and Benefits statutory services. We also have our own debt and money advice service, and inspections team to maximise income.

These services include:

  • Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction support to over 31,000 households

  • Council Tax billing and collection for over 180,000 households

  • Business Rates billing and collection for over 12,000 businesses

  • Collection of the Business Improvement District Levy for Northampton Town Centre and Brackmills.

  • Delivery of a debt and money advice service offering support to some of our most vulnerable residents

What will you be doing?

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our successful Billing Team, you will be responsible for the accurate and timely administration of Council Tax billing. This role is interesting and varied, and we are looking for enthusiastic team players who can support us with key responsibilities including determining applications and reviews for discounts and exemptions.

About you

You do not need experience across all aspects of the role as we will support you with a full development plan, however, we would like to hear from prospective new colleagues who can demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and practical application of, or the ability to learn, revenues legislation

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

  • Ability to work as part of a team and on your own initiative

  • Ability to work methodically, accurately, and to agreed deadlines

  • Ability to use a wide range of IT packages

  • Ability to build and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and managers

  • An interest in career development within Local Government

The council is in the process of implementing a new pay structure and terms and conditions which will be applicable to this role. The outcome could result in a future variation to the advertised salary, and this will be discussed at interview.
