The team

KPMG's Infrastructure and Government Strategic Advisory Services (SAS) team is building a cost optimisation capability and looking at hiring a number of exceptional candidates, across grades in our London-based team. The team needs a diversity of talented individuals who have a passion for identifying, creating and delivering innovative solutions which help our public and private clients to drive sustainable reduction in their operating and capital cost, while maintaining delivery of key business outcomes.

The SAS team works with C-suite level executives across government, arms-length bodies and industry on the biggest most complex strategic, financial, business and operating model issues. We work with leaders in the public sector and industry partners to design and implement solutions which enable delivery of government policy, this covering the delivery of major new infrastructure or government services to citizens. We are building on these relationships and extending our support to these clients by enabling them to establish effective and cost efficient operating models.

It is an exciting time to join the team, we are working on some fascinating public issues including: Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) implications for the public sector and its partners; the future structure of the rail sector, the implications from the rise of electric and autonomous vehicles, and how to deliver some of the largest most complex infrastructure programmes in the UK. The addition of cost optimisation capability to this portfolio enables us to broaden and deepen our strong relationships across government and infrastructure clients.

The role

We are seeking a Manager to perform a critical role in delivering client projects, supporting business development and helping our team to grow and develop. The individual should have a strong track record of delivering cost transformation programmes, with involvement ranging from strategic opportunity assessment and hypothesis generation through to supporting delivery of specific cost reduction initiatives.

Key areas where Managers contribute to the team include:

  • Develop solutions to complex problems and collaborate with more senior colleagues and clients
  • Generate hypotheses and take ownership of storyboarding in collaboration with team members
  • Lead the design and delivery of small projects and / or large, complex work streams, often managing the day to day client relationship
  • Produce high quality, client ready deliverables that exceed expectations and require limited review
  • Work on the development our cost optimisation strategy and proposition
  • Support the identification of on-sell / cross-sell opportunities by working with other parts of KPMG targeting adjacent markets
  • Build and maintain a strong internal and external network to promote our services and the value provided
  • To work effectively with clients whilst delivering engagements and act as an ‘ambassador’ for KPMG
  • Contribute to the development of the team and fostering our collaborative and supportive team culture
  • Performance managing junior colleagues, coaching and supporting their career development
  • Demonstrate high levels of drive, ambition, and ability to collaborate at high levels of intensity


The Person

Applicants will need to display the following:

  • Experience of working with clients and delivering cost transformations and/or efficiency programmes
  • Experience in generating and quantifying the cost reduction opportunities
  • Track record in performing robust analysis covering baseline, quantification of opportunities and benefit cases
  • Knowledge of cost analysis techniques including zero based budgeting, spans and layers analysis, activity analysis and benchmark analysis
  • Experience in benefit management and implementation planning
  • Ability to lead parts of complex strategy and/or operating model projects in a consulting or corporate environment (a strategy house, big 4 firm) or central strategy / corporate development team of a large company / government
  • Involvement in business development activity e.g. building relationships with clients during engagements, contributing to bid responses
  • Experience of coaching team members, sharing knowledge and working effectively in teams
  • Be comfortable handling ambiguity and changing client demands
  • Strong numerical capabilities combined with sound commercial acumen
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills
  • A first class or 2.1 degree from a leading institution, an MBA or equivalent is a definite plus but is not a minimum requirement

Preferred experience

  • Knowledge and understanding of asset-intensive industries cost challenges with a focus on Government, Transport and Infrastructure Sectors
