The Communications Department at our Eastern Territorial Headquarters has an opening for Copy Editor/Proofreader. As a member of The Salvation Army's Communications Department, a Christian organization, the copy editor/proofreader will be responsible for developing and maintaining editorial style guides for diverse publications, projects (such as promotional materials, posters, and books), social media, and web posts. The primary objective of this role is to conduct a comprehensive review of all copy while working closely with the editors to ensure the content's accuracy (including fact-checking) and quality. The copy editor/proofreader will meticulously scrutinize the text for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax errors, as well as ensure the logic, clarity, and consistency of the writing.

Responsibilities:

Demonstrate a comprehensive command of the English language, including proficiency. Exhibit meticulousness in reviewing copy and identifying any punctuation, spelling, and word usage errors, as well as verifying the accuracy of statements. Maintain adherence to the organization's publication standards regarding style and format and ensure consistency in language presentation concerning style guides and specialized vocabulary.

  • Possess proficient written and oral communication abilities to effectively liaise with writers, designers, and staff to ensure documents comply with all guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Editor as well as with the Publication Content and Design Director to establish a comprehensive style guide for saconnects magazine and other publications.
  • Coordinate with other communication department leaders to develop and execute a style guide for departmental projects.
  • Demonstrate meticulousness and attentiveness to detail when proofreading and editing text at various stages of the writing process.
  • Exhibit self-assuredness in revising narrative, editorial, and instructional texts for significance, excellence, and presentation.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to collaborate with a creative team of writers, graphic designers, and other professionals.
  • Familiarity with Christian faith, evangelism, and biblical teachings.
  • Comfortably proficient in a MAC-based environment, Microsoft Office, and Adobe InDesign.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt effortlessly.
Qualifications:
  • 5-7 years of related experience.
  • Possess a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field of study.
  • Have a track record of at least four years of experience in editing and writing copy, with a demonstrated mastery of AP style and grammar.
  • Show previous involvement in creating or implementing a comprehensive style guide.
  • Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in using Microsoft Word.
  • Show proficiency in Adobe InDesign and familiarity with InCopy is a bonus.
  • Exhibit robust organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Be capable of working independently as necessary and adept at appropriately prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • It is advantageous to possess a strong commitment and a thorough comprehension of The Salvation Army and its mission.
  • Be able to perform well under high-pressure circumstances.
