Nursery cook
Bloomsbury, Central London
Part-time with core hours 8am - 1:30pm (30min break)
£11.50 - £12.50 / h
Starting date - Spring 2023

The nursery is unique as it is a community nursery managed by a management committee (MC) for almost 60 years. CGN provides a special setting on a conservation site, boasting a wild and magical outdoor garden space, in an historic part of central London.
We pride ourselves on providing children with the opportunity to discover and develop their skills in an outdoor setting with a strong focus on forest school and environmental sustainability. The cook is responsible for the day to day dietary requirements and food preparation for children within the nursery.
We are looking for a passionate, reliable individual who believes that children deserve good healthy food. As the Nursery Cook the role would require you to prepare and serve healthy lunches and snacks each day Monday to Friday for our children aged 2-5 years. You would be working preparing a 4 week seasonal menu that you would follow, cater for children with special diets and have a similar alternative meal prepared for them each day. The kitchen should follow all local health & environmental guidelines,
Professional qualifications are not a requirement, but allergen and food hygiene training is a must. Additional Training can be provided if needed. The main responsibility is to provide a balanced and warm lunch. Timing can be flexible and adapted to individual needs (childcare, other work commitments,..) as long as the core chef task for the nursery can be fulfilled.
- Follow safe working practices for children and staff and to comply with food hygiene and safety policies.
- Play a role in the education of our children’s development by teaching them basic cooking skills and promoting healthy eating. A creative approach is welcome. Indoor and outdoor cooking, utilising home grown vegetables and herbs.
- To provide high quality, nutritious and freshly prepared meals and snacks, in line with food hygiene and safety regulations and company policies. The nursery provides vegetarian meals and snacks only.
- Liaise with suppliers to ensure good levels of service are provided.
- Accept deliveries and store away appropriately, following correct manual handling techniques and effective stock rotation.
- To liaise with regulatory bodies during their inspection visits.
- Comply with the company’s procedures relating to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
- To order food supplies to meet the menu requirements whilst remaining within budget.
- To report any damaged or faulty equipment to nursery management to enable this to be logged for repairs accordingly. Take action to control any risk and ensure all relevant paperwork is completed.
- To understand the food standards requirements for the management of medical conditions, in particular food allergies.
