PERMANENT ROLE - CONTROL TOWER PLANNER
A new and dynamic opportunity has arisen within our Planning Team on site at Derby Control Tower, that we operate on behalf of our clients.
How will you contribute?
The role has been created following a new business win which will see us manage international freight activities for our customer as part of a wider business win. This will involve daily interactions with multiple stakeholders across the customer supply chain and our subcontraction partners to achieve a seamless experience and delivery excellence.

What will you bring?
- To use the automated planning system to always drive the maximum utilisation of Wincanton fleet and external subcon resources
- To use the automated planning system to build loads from customer orders so that the most efficient loads are built and executed
- To improve on automated planning outcomes through interaction with off system opportunities, other planners within Wincanton and sourcing backloads from the open market to result in a more efficient plan that automation alone
- To balance maximised utilisation and efficiency with the delivery of customer service level agreements measured through systemic KPI’s
- To ensure that data within the orders, loads and shifts is always kept accurate and up to date so that digital systems are always correct and processes can be executed in the most efficient manner by all users and stakeholders
- To continually look for opportunities to secure sustainable two-way planning opportunities that will support new Wincanton fleet to be deployed and enable growth in Wincanton fleet capability
- Always considering the HSE impact of planning decisions to ensure that risks to our Drivers, all Stakeholders and the environment are minimised or eliminated
- Ensure that all activity in the TMS is accurately planned and reflective of reality so that all reports, KPI’s and details are automatically accurate
- Continually driving the bottom line through maximising asset utilisation and supporting initiatives to deliver commercial benefits to Wincanton
- Manage customer relationships ensuring excellent communication so that issues are highlighted and dealt with quickly and appropriately. Suggesting improvements and working with the Customers and Customer Service Teams to resolve issues and deliver efficient real time resolutions.
Skills & Experience:
- Experience of international freight both road and sea highly desirable
- Industrious and busy individual with an affinity for a time pressurised environment
- Excellent Communication skills, both verbal and via systems
- Experience of freight forwarding or transport planning operations essential, ideally in a network planning environment
- Systems user, comfortable with modern digital systems and the application of data combined with general large fleet operation experience
- Experience of logistics and supply chain business and the operational requirements
- Succeeds in building effective relationships internally and externally, with the ability to challenge and/or influence colleagues’ and supplier’s thinking
- Demonstrates capability and composure in a systemic working method, using data and systemic process to effect accurate and efficient outcomes
- Demonstrates understanding and aptitude in how to the use of technology to drive performance.
- Focused, tenacious, diligent and motivated by achievement.
- Strong numerical reasoning and commercial acumen
- KPI driven with a desire to make a difference by delivering on personal targets in a team environment
- Comfortable in a high performance team and in a change environment
- Ortec or other TMS Planning experience,
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to make clear decisions with rational to support.
