Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of a substantive consultant in Neuropathology. This is a replacement post within the department of Cellular Pathology in the Cancer and Associated Specialties division (CAS). This post will be based at the Queens Medical Centre campus Nottingham.

We are looking for a forward thinking Consultant Neuropathologist to join our existing team of committed and enthusiastic consultants. This is a supra-regional specialist service that provides expert diagnostic neuropathological opinion for over 4.5 million patients in the East Midlands. In order to better meet our patients’ needs, working with colleagues at the University of Nottingham and more widely, we are in the process of introducing Oxford Nanopore Technology to routine neuro-oncology diagnosis.

The appointment will be whole time (10PA). Any consultant who is unable to work whole time will be eligible to be considered for the post.

Candidates will be expected to have relevant expertise in Neuropathology.

You are expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (including supervision, training, assessment and appraisal of specialist registrars and biomedical scientists), clinical audit, research and development. You will work within the multidisciplinary team of Neuropathology and may also be required to undertake management duties. Participation in the coronial autopsy service is welcome but optional.

Main duties of the job

The appointee, in collaboration with the other Consultants will be expected to fulfil the duties detailed in Job description which can be found in our job pack, attached in the supporting documents. The content of this Job Description represents an outline of the post only and is therefore not a precise indication of duties and responsibilities. The Job Description is therefore intended to be flexible and will be subject to review and amendment in the light of changing circumstances, following consultation with the post holder

Working for our organisation

The working environment is supportive and friendly; there are excellent relations with both clinical colleagues and academics at the University of Nottingham. The Nottingham Neuro-Oncology Service has been granted Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence status. The Neuropathology Service supports a number of clinical trials, including the BRAIN MATRIX and SIOP II Ependymoma trials. The successful applicant would be welcome to support these and other academic activities.

The department and subspecialist teams support new Consultants to help them adjust into their roles and gain experience and explore their interests.

Our Cellular Pathology Service is split across 2 campuses (QMC and NCH) approximately 30 minutes’ drive from each other.

We process in excess 98,000 surgical specimens, 6000 non-gynaecological cytology cases and 1500 post mortems (the majority for H M Coroner) per annum including use of CTPM technology.

The Neuropathology workload is detailed within the Job Description.

Cellular Pathology at NUH is actively using digital pathology for primary diagnostics and the appointee will be supported to transition to Whole Slide Image reporting and offered the opportunity to contribute to the future development of digital pathology diagnostics.

The Department is a teaching and training department and the appointee will be expected to deliver undergraduate teaching (tutorials) and to contribute to the local ST teaching programme, as well as developing our own BMS staff.
