Applications are invited for the above full time post for this 660 bedded acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. The appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England).
This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly team of eight existing neurology consultants, two specialist registrars, five neurology nurse specialists, research nurses and administration and secretarial staff in providing a comprehensive neurology service. We welcome applications from candidates with a sub-speciality interest that will complement the range of services currently provided. Over the last five years, several specialist services including MS, Epilepsy, rare neurological and Parkinson’s disease and specialist Headache pathways have prospered in the organization.
The Key tasks for the role of Consultant in Neurology are;
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Hospital.
- To share, with colleagues in the Neurology Department the management of all adult patients with neurological diseases referred to the Trust.
- Teaching and training of intermediate grade and, junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students. Supporting the Neurology Clinical Nurse Specialists.
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
- To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development

The appointee will join the well established department as a Consultant in Neurology at the L&D.
The post holder will play a full part in the work of the Department and will be expected to provide leadership to maintain and develop Neurology services.
The post holder will share equitable responsibilities with their professional colleagues and will contribute to the governance arrangements of the department. He or she will be expected to provide Neurology cover for in-patient referrals at the L&D.
The post holder will be encouraged to develop a special interest in line with the Departmental policy to develop its range of specialist services. Audit will be a mandatory part of the role.
The appointee will be expected to take an active part in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching, including the training of Specialist Registrars. Along with this, he/she will be expected to carry out audit projects. He/she may also undertake research.
The Consultant will be responsible for the training and supervision of junior medical staff who work with him/her and the Consultant will devote time for this activity on a regular basis.
This appointment will be for 10 Programmed Activities per week. There will be an allocation of 8.5 DCC’s and 1.5 Core SPA. There will be four Neurology out-patient clinics at the L&D per week.
The post holder will be required to contribute to a 1 in 12 on call rota at the Royal Free which will attract an availability supplement appropriate to the nature of the duties undertaken in accordance with the Consultant Contract 2003 (as amended 2022) and a 1 in 12 on call at the HASU.
The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital (L&D) has always been renowned for its friendly atmosphere and good working relationships. The Hospital has an excellent track record of financial and senior executive stability.
The Trust has University Hospital status which provides an academic environment to the hospital. In addition to postgraduate training, we welcome medical students from the UCL Medical School throughout the year and by arrangement with the medical school provide a programme of clinical placements to support their education. We have an excellent reputation for junior staff training. Within the Centre of Multi-Professional Educational & Training (COMET) is the Medical Education Department, the library including an IT suite, and the Training & Development Department. The main aim of the Medical Education Department is to promote postgraduate and continuing medical education and training for all doctors and dentists. The Hospital actively promotes career development and progression for all staff.
The Hospital has excellent access to the surrounding areas with easy access to central London and the rural Chilterns. The rural areas include many attractive villages and towns within easy reach of the Hospital including St Albans and Harpenden. Excellent schools are found nearby. There is also very good access to the Midlands and North by road using the M1 or A1, or by rail to one of the Luton’s three stations. A direct link using the new ‘Busway’ takes passengers from Luton Train station just 7 minutes to reach a stop that is within a short walking distance of the hospital. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes of the hospital.
Applicants must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council’s Specialist Register and have MRCP. Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of CCT.
