Job description
The new consultant is required to join the team of consultants at Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics with out-of-hours commitments at the Horton Hospital which is a part of the Oxford University Hospitals NHSFT. The position would suit anaesthetists seeking to have a consultant career in a major teaching hospital with an interest in chronic pain management and considerable expertise in complex major surgery.

The focus of this post is the delivery of high-quality pain management in the Churchill Hospital and high- quality anaesthesia at the Nuffield Orthopaedic centre and Horton Hospital theatre suites. In addition, there are flexible sessions in the posts allowing the post-holder to maintain an interest and skills in other areas of anaesthesia. Out of hours the post-holder will be resident / non-resident on call to provide emergency cover for the Horton Hospital site.
The John Radcliffe Hospital (JR) is a Major Trauma centre, and tertiary referral centre for several surgical specialties. The JR2 site comprises 8 theatres and the services covered in this site includes General emergencies, Vascular anaesthesia, Major Trauma, Interventional Radiology and Cardio-thoracic Surgery. Cardiac-thoracic anaesthesia is provided by cardiac anaesthetists. The West Wing is in continuation with the main John Radcliffe by a link corridor. The theatre suite comprises of 14 theatres over 2 floors and is in close proximity to the Neurointensive Care Unit and Radiology departments. The services in the West Wing theatre complex include Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery and Interventional Radiology. Paediatric surgery is also performed here but is covered by a separate dedicated rota of Paediatric Anaesthetists.
The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the Churchill Hospital, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations: John Radcliffe(JR), Churchill(CH), Horton Hospitals(HH) and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital (NOC).
Clinical

Teaching/Research
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.
Clinical Governance
The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional Development
The post-holder will be required to keep fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust through Appraisal.
Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.
Management
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
