University Hospitals Sussex are delighted to offer the position of a full (or part) time Consultant Haematologist to work alongside our team of 5 Haematologists based at Worthing and St Richard’s Hospitals. This position is based primarily in St Richards Hospital, Chichester in a beautiful part of West Sussex.

The Haematology department provides an extensive haemato-oncology practice (level 2b care), as well as general haematology incl. obstetrics, paediatrics, transfusion medicine and is a UKHCDO accredited Haemophilia Centre.
This is an exciting opportunity to become involved in developing a clinically led, integrated Haematology Service within the wider trust along the South Coast (including the Haematology department at Royal Sussex County Hospital – Brighton) and offers the applicant the opportunity and encouragement to develop a chosen specialist interest . We offer flexible working, the potential for cross site working and have a 1 in 6 on-call rota.
To fulfil the role of a Consultant Haematologist in providing full clinical care to those with blood disorders in both an in-patient and out-patient setting. This covers all aspects of Haematology including both malignant and non-malignant disorders, Haemostasis and Thrombosis, Transfusion etc.
In-patient care mostly consists of those with haematological malignancy up to and including BSCH level 2B care (salvage lymphoma, ALL and AML regimes).
To support colleagues with specialist advice on all aspects of Haematology both within the trust and in primary care.
To provide clinical support to the Haematology Laboratory
To actively engage in departmental meetings, clinical governance and teaching to our SpRs and clinical fellow
To become actively involved in our Haematology trials portfolio
UHS NHS Foundation trust is a new trust situated along the South Coast of West Sussex and covers hospitals from Chichester in the West to Brighton in the East. It is born of a merger between West Sussex NHS trust and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS trust. The integration of Haematology Services into one larger department is currently in an embryonic stage creating opportunities for potential applicants to become involved in this process and develop new aspects to their role in the future.
St Richards and Worthing hospital formally made the Western Sussex NHS trust (CQC rated outstanding) and this role is predominantly based in St Richards with cross site on call cover. At St Richards out- patient chemotherapy is given in the purpose built Fernhurst Centre to which the Macmillan Environmental rating scheme has awarded an “excellent” rating and our inpatient chemotherapy is given on Apuldram Ward. We have excellent links with our transplant centres in Southampton and London.
Chichester is an attractive cathedral town located just south of the South Downs national park with easy access to nearby beaches, sailing and areas of outstanding natural beauty. It has good schools and is around an hours drive to Southampton
The appointee will be expected to fulfil all job roles of a Consultant Haematologist. They will provide inpatient care for haematology patients up to and including BCSH level 2B. They will be expected to attend clinics for both new and follow up patients, participate in MDT and departmental meetings and participate regularly in audit and guideline production. In addition we would expect the appointee to complete all patient-related administrative duties in a timely manner as well as bone marrow and blood film reporting, participate in safe intrathecal chemotherapy administration and support our SpRs in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy . They would also be expected to provide consultative advice to other healthcare professionals within the hospital and primary care settings.
We have a very active trials department covering both malignant and non-malignant disciplines and are regularly within the top ten recruiters to national trials. We currently have the following open to recruitment or in follow up within the trust: AML18, REMoDL-A, Flair, RADAR, Fitness, Mithridate and Victor.
The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical trials and maintain good clinical practice. The Trust has an active Research Support team, and other research and development is encouraged.
The appointee will be expected to maintain their clinical personal development and attend annual appraisal and revalidation.
As a Consultant Haematologist, we would expect the appointee to act as a leader within the department and champion the goals of the department and the organisation as a whole.
The trust runs monthly mandated clinical governance half day with presentations from individual departments or stand-alone afternoons for departmental issues. Both hospitals currently have individual MDTs and regular teaching sessions within department. There is an active audit programme being led by the audit lead Dr Narat and materially assisted by the hospital audit department. Participation in fortnightly journal club and other educational meetings is encouraged
