Job description

The post will be based mainly at PRUH with attending weeks at Denmark Hill NICU and non-resident on call at PRUH site. Attending weeks will be mainly based at PRUH site and clinics and other activities will also take place at PRUH site. The proposed Job Plan is attached.

Following work undertaken to transform the way clinical care is delivered at King’s, all new consultant appointments will comprise 1.5 SPAs. One SPA is for activities relevant for appraisal and revalidation. 0.5 SPA is for particular interests such as Teaching and management. The outputs of the 0.5 SPA will be reviewed by the Clinical Lead at 12-18 months.

Office space and secretarial support will be provided at both sites. The post-holder will be expected to join the existing team of neonatologists and share clinical responsibilities. These posts will ensure that the consultants will be able to provide a 2 in 6 weeks attending commitment during weekday normal working hours to the LNU/NICU, antenatal and postnatal wards. One consultant will be “on” for the LNU while attending at PRUH. When not on for attending weeks, time will be devoted to outpatient clinics, administration, teaching, clinical governance and other activities related to clinical care. The on call non-resident consultant team will provide cover until 9.30 pm on weekdays and until 5:30 pm on weekends. Overnight cover will be led in house by the registrars/SCF and ST1/ JCF.

Together with the other Consultant Neonatologists, to provide a tertiary Neonatal service. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.

Shared responsibility with the other consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the unit on a rota basis. There is also a responsibility for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.

Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

Responsibility for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.

To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.

To contribute to the Audit Programme.

To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.

To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Neonatal services.

To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.

You are appointed to the service of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as a whole, and may be required to work at any of the KCHFT sites as determined by the duties of the post or as reasonably directed.

The neonatal unit at PRUH which has recently been approved to run as a level 2 local neonatal unit, supporting one of the busiest maternity unit that delivers close to 5,000 babies/year. This will help increase the bed capacity to 18 beds with 7 HDU and 6 SCBU beds and 5 TC beds with flexibility to increase the numbers to 8 HDU and 8 SCBU beds in case of twin babies. During the transition into LNU, babies born at gestation of 29 weeks and above 1000g are being admitted with the expectation to meet the service specifications of LNU soon after the capital works which are planned to be completed over the summer of 2023.

There regular general neonatal outpatient clinics, and specialised clinics including neurodevelopmental clinics. The postnatal ward is one of the busiest PNW and is supported by an associate specialist and infant feeding care team.

There is dedicated neonatal consultant rota at PRUH which is separate from General Paediatric Rota, who provide consultant cover to LNU and attending ITU week cover at Denmark Hill site as described in the job plan.
