Job description

Join Our Award-Winning Energy and Infrastructure Team

Are you a Construction & Engineering Lawyer with a strong interest in renewable and clean energy and significant infrastructure projects? If so, this is a great opportunity to join a team that is recognised as being at the forefront of Net Zero, renewable energy and major infrastructure legal advice.

"The team knows the renewable energy industry inside and out and can provide really high-level expertise across a range of subjects" (Chambers UK, 2020).

"Burges Salmon LLP has an impressive cross-sector infrastructure practice with a particular focus on the energy, transport, and defence sectors" (Legal 500, 2021).

As an Associate at Burges Salmon, you will gain professional development with a structured path to advancing your career, guided by an award-winning and supportive leadership team to enhance your skills and experience.

In 2020, we were named both UK Law Firm of the Year and Energy & Infrastructure Team of the Year at the British Legal Awards 2020 and in 2021 we have been accredited as Investors in People Platinum Standard.

You will take responsibility for your work and be trusted to get on with things, leading junior colleagues in a friendly and sociable setting. Our Energy & Infrastructure team is one of the largest, most diverse projects teams in the UK, so there will be opportunities to experience and learn about different sectors whilst maintaining and growing your Energy experience.

Locations

We have offices in Bristol and Edinburgh but we also have colleagues living further afield. We don't have a strict office attendance policy, instead we have a hybrid working approach where our colleagues are trusted to support each other and get on with things, as part of a collaborative and committed team working from both the office and at home.

We are interested in hearing from both England & Wales, Scottish and Northern Irish-qualified lawyers.

Work

We have an outstanding reputation working on strategic, complex and innovative projects in the UK. Last year the energy team advised on:

  • The UK's first deep geothermal power projects including the Eden Project in Cornwall
  • 3 floating wind and multiple offshore wind projects;
  • 600MW of battery storage
  • 550MW of UK onshore wind projects and 1345MW of solar projects
  • 8 biomass/ waste to energy deals/projects
  • 3 Hydro schemes and 2 hydrogen projects
  • For further projects, Click Here.

Our work requires us to have an appreciation not just of the legal issues but also the underlying commercial objectives. You will find us in tier 1 of many areas of the directories including Energy, Renewables, Environment and Nuclear. With our strong UK-wide presence, we are one of the firms on the CCS and our clients include central and local government, utilities, developers, funder and investors, Tier 1 contractors as well as end-users such as:

MeyGen, GIG, Costain Limited, Wave Hub, Octopus Group, Zenobe, EDF, Highways England, Aviva, Foresight, Equitix, ENGIE, LWaRB & Investec Bank and well as many innovative developers, funders and investors.

You will advise on cutting edge projects in the UK and overseas, working with our projects, real estate, finance and corporate lawyers to enable complex construction, redevelopment and infrastructure projects to come to fruition. The breadth of the technologies you will be able to advise on will be second to none and you will encouraged to build relationships and sit on industry groups.

Requirements

  • Strong academics, coupled with evidence of good quality training and experience gained at a firm with a reputation for high quality construction and engineering work.
  • A strong team player.
  • Excellent interpersonal, client and commercial skills.
  • Adaptable and able to deal with complex, varied work under pressure.
  • Gained experience leading others to develop their skills and knowledge.
  • You will need to be a SRA registered lawyer.
