Grade: Conductor
Salary: £21,667 per annum, rising to £29,915 per annum after training (approx 3 months)
At Northern we aim to develop and champion excellence in not only our services but also our people. We are currently looking for Conductors to join our Stations, to provide exceptional customer service to all our customers.
Working on our trains as a Conductor, you’ll be the face of Northern as you help our customers have a relaxed, easy, enjoyable and safe journey - a real Northern experience. But there’s a lot more to the role than just checking tickets and travel documents. It’s also about building relationships with customers and answering queries, opening and closing train doors, making announcements, and dealing with unexpected delays and emergencies.
You don’t need any previous experience of working in the Rail Industry, as we’ll provide you with all the training you need to be successful and competent in the role. Our bespoke and interactive Conductor training programme starts with an initial 12-weeks classroom-based training in Leeds or Manchester. The programme also includes an Apprenticeship, leading towards a Level 2 Qualification.
After that, you’ll make the most of a further 12 months of intensive learning and development at your home station, where you’ll learn your routes and build your knowledge of our trains so that safety always remains your priority.
Responsibilities:
Your main responsibilities will be to:
- Ensure safety of all customers onboard our trains/stations.
- Assist customers with all enquiries, ensuring needs are satisfied; demonstrating vigilance to identify and support vulnerable passengers.
- Undertake revenue collection and protection duties to protect from loss, theft and damage.
- Comply with rules, regulations and instructions issued by the Company; undertake assessments in line with role requirements; keeping up to date with of all notices and amendments affecting traction, routes and operating instructions.
- Maintain knowledge of current routes and traction competence.
- Report any unusual activities or occurrences such as service running late, unsafe practices, customer issues etc; ensuring assistance and regular updates are provided to passengers in the event of delays.
- Locate, rectify and report on faults, following the correct fault-finding procedure.
- Train preparation and disposal duties; ensuring a clean train environment.
- Assist and support the driver, passengers and emergency services where required.
- Operate on-board systems and PA equipment.
- Regularly patrol the train to ensure customer and company satisfaction is maintained.
About you:
You will live within a 45-minute drive (at peak times) of the station you are applying for. And you will also be at least 18 years old to apply for this safety critical role.

- Good level of Math's and English

- Willing to wear the Northern uniform with pride, ensuring it is clean and presentable.
- Flexible to work early, late and evening shifts, throughout a 7-day week.
