Job description

M&S is turbocharging digital and continuing to deliver excellent personalised experiences, however our customers choose to shop with us. And we're looking for a dedicated data compliance and governance champion to join us, as we transform how we value and use data!

You'll work closely as part of dedicated team to develop new initiatives, risk and impact assessments, as well as carrying out regular health status checks.

Through leading on compliance, you'll ensure that operational practices are aligned with data protection laws and regulation, as well as supporting the M&S Data Strategy. You'll raise awareness of data protection legislation and regulation, and nurture a culture of data protection compliance across M&S.

Key accountabilities and measures

  • As part of the team, provide advice and mentorship on data protection standards, supporting delivery of strategic initiatives impacting personal data.
  • Drafting local policies and procedures.
  • Acting as the local authority in data protection compliance; providing day-to-day support to the business, utilising the central Data Protection Team where required.
  • Maintaining authoritative knowledge of current EU and UK data regulation and best practice data integrity and security practices.
  • Ensure that data inventories and catalogue are accurate and up to date.
  • Ensure that personal data lifecycle management is undertaken with compliance in mind.
  • Document records of business processes that impact the processing of personal data.
  • Undertaking privacy impact assessments; utilising existing tools and resources.
  • Serve as a liaison between Business, Functional areas & Bank for data compliance, identifying local systems impacting the processing of personal data
  • Facilitate the resolution of issues and queries with personal data.
  • Support & continually improve the compliance framework.
  • Developing and delivering local data protection training modules for all colleagues.
  • Identifying higher risk roles within your business area and crafting and delivering tailored data protection training modules, as well as data protection awareness communications and campaigns.

Key skills

  • Passion for driving improved business performance through a data led approach and culture.
  • Solid working knowledge of the ePrivacy rules and demonstrable knowledge of social retargeting and key legal challenges in this area of marketing
  • Demonstrable experience of Embedding Privacy Compliance Framework in a customer facing environment.
  • Understand the nuances and complexities around customer data.
  • Demonstrable experience of engaging, influencing and presenting to business partners at all levels.
  • Experience in building and maintaining a successful data compliance framework.
  • Solid understanding of data protection legislation and regulation and UK data protection regulatory regime.
  • Data focused with an analytical approach.
  • Good understanding of or experience with risk assessment methodology and the role of risk in privacy compliance.
  • Has an innovative approach and is adaptable and responsive to changing priorities.
  • Ability to navigate complex situations, achieve positive outcomes, encourage new ideas and see opportunity.
  • Ability to engage, motivate and gain active participation with individuals and teams to whom data governance and protection may not be their number one priority.
