Safe2Speak Domestic Abuse Services is commissioned by St Helens Council to deliver support to victims of Domestic Abuse across the region. The current service includes (IDVA) Independent Domestic Violence Adviser, working with high risk victims of abuse, Domestic Abuse Outreach, working with medium to low level victims and an emergency accommodation facility for victims fleeing domestic abuse.
This is an exciting opportunity, and a much-needed dedicated role working with victims of domestic abuse with complex and multiple needs.
The Complex Case IDVA will be jointly managed by CGL and Safe2Speak benefiting from Safe2Speak management guidance and established/existing pathways to support victims of domestic abuse and their children.
The Complex IDVA will also be trained in relation to substance use by CGL and will deliver a range of interventions to support victims/survivors of abuse in the following ways:
- Support around substance use and navigating external agencies
- Creating safety plans and undertaking risk assessments
- Accompanying clients to court or arranging pre-trial visits and requesting special measures e.g., screens to conceal clients in court so they do not have to face their abuser
- Helping clients to access refuge accommodation where required
- Helping clients to increase security in their property so that they can continue to live safely at home
- Providing emotional support and referring victims to counselling or mental health services
- Liaising with social workers on child protection issues and other key agencies
- Representing victim’s views and wishes at Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conferences (MARAC) meeting
- Helping clients to make informed choices about the criminal justice process & accessing civil legal measures, liaising with the Police and other public services to promote victims ongoing safety, supporting clients to give evidence and write victim impact statements
- Contribute to the development of a perpetrator programme through the voice of the victim and ensuring victim safety
- Keep up to date with legislative changes and best practice regarding domestic abuse.
- Share own knowledge, skills and professional updates, to support up-skilling and development within internal and external teams.
- Raise awareness of domestic abuse and its effects on people and families.
To be successful in the role of Complex IDVA you will have:
- Experience of working and engaging with people and families with complex needs and or challenging behaviour suffering domestic abuse.
- Knowledge of domestic abuse legislation and best practice.
- Track record of managing a case load, including support planning and multi-agency working.
- Experience of crisis management, risk minimisation and of making decisions in difficult situations.
- Evidence of managing personal resilience when dealing with difficult situations and identifying mechanisms to deal with these.
- Knowledge and Experience of Safeguarding Practices and Procedures
- Track record of building a rapport with clients whilst maintaining professional boundaries.
