CEO
This role has evolved from Marketing Director to Communications Director to better represent the charity’s current needs. 2025 will be POW’s 10th anniversary and we are aiming to apply for Arts Council NPO status in 2026 so now is a great time to join us as we become more ambitious, professional and committed to tackling gender inequalities in Thanet and beyond. We have identified four main audiences and this role will help shape how we reach them.
POW’s projects over the next year include:
- Piloting ticketed events in the Autumn designed to generate income
- Diversifying our income streams including merchandise and corporate sponsors
- 9th annual International Women’s Day Festival in March 2023 themed on “rest”

- Developing our Youth & Schools Programme
- Year 1 of a three-year Community Campaign around gender inequalities in healthcare
- Preparing for 10th IWD Festival in March 2025
We are a small but mighty team, plus we’re dynamic and incredibly supportive of each other. We know that this fixed-term and part-time role may exclude some applicants and are working on our financial stability. The CEO will work with you to determine priorities and ensure the workload is appropriate. We are looking for an individual who embodies our values:
- Equity - providing tailored support and structures that reflect the needs of our audience and organisation
- Creativity - using the Arts to explore gender equality and celebrating local talent
- Empowerment - listening to our audiences and each other and seeking opportunities for collaboration and co-creation,
- Bravery - embracing opportunities for growth while treating our audiences and each other with compassion and ensuring our working practices are sustainable
Roles & Responsibilities
This is a Director role so you will have a lot of creative freedom and authority to determine the scope of the work. You will work closely with the CEO, Artistic Director and Trustees where necessary.
The three immediate priorities are:
Comms Strategy - we have successfully used a Marketing Plan to deliver against reach targets. However POW is now moving to a year-round model and we need to better communicate the impact the charity is having. A Comms Strategy would include a calendar in line with programming, fundraising campaigns and the four key audiences outlined in our Audience Development Plan. You will set and monitor targets and assess what resources are needed to help best deliver the Strategy. You will map out key messages and develop systems to then implement this strategy
Brand design - you will develop POW’s identity (with a graphic designer) including tone of voice and branding; oversee merchandise look-and-feel; audit current squarespace website to ensure a cohesive website user journey and oversee redesign if necessary; improve SEO and track analytics; update web content including events listings and blog; ensure consistency throughout all of our Communications channels; and oversee merchandise design inline with branding
PR and reputation management - we have identified that many people are unaware that POW is a charity and/or the impact it has on improving gender equality in Thanet; therefore, we want to better promote our work, generate conversation and capitalise on our high-profile partners. You will generate press and social media coverage to raise awareness, sell tickets and encourage donations; leverage high-profile creatives/supporters; develop and implement campaigns around key messages; lead on press releases and pitches for interviews; manage media relationships; work with CEO on crisis comms; write awards applications; develop key impact and fundraising messages for POW to communicate at events; and ensure appropriate recognition of all sponsors and funders
You will also need to prioritise and manage our comms channels including social media marketing, print marketing, emails, and internal comms.
Skills needed
- Experience in developing and implementing a Communications Strategy
- Creative problem-solving
- Organised and able to prioritise based on what will generate the biggest impact
- Excellent attention to detail
- Confident communicator
- Understanding of different comms channels and able to select appropriate ones for our audiences
- Experience in content creation and delivery across instagram, facebook, linkedin, twitter, tiktok, e-newsletters and website
- Desirable: comms experience working with a charity and/or gender equality organisation
