Yorkshire Cancer Research is entering an exciting period in its development. As part of this we are expanding our team at our Head Office and several new roles are being created. As such, we are now looking for an Internal Communications Manager to support our Brand and Relationships team.

The Role

As an Internal Communications Manager, you will take a leading role in the ongoing strategic planning and development of this function. As part of this new role, you will continuously collaborate with employees and volunteers across the charity, including remote workers across Yorkshire, to understand the strategic and tactical communication needs and how the charity’s Leadership team can best fulfil these.

Supporting the Head of Communications and Engagement, you will build and maintain employee satisfaction through information sharing, creating an inclusive culture of communication, influence charity culture by setting and delivering the charity’s tone-of-voice and reinforcing key messages. You will create an internal communication plan to build employee understanding of the charity’s strategy, values and culture, and lead on its delivery and monitor its impact, ensuring continuous improvement.

Specifically, you will:

  • Lead and continually develop an internal communication infrastructure at Yorkshire Cancer Research that will connect staff and foster collaboration and innovation across the charity.
  • Establish and maintain an intranet, providing a hub for news, information and resources.
  • Organise, plan, draft and coordinate organisational broadcast communication to different departments.
  • Develop, create and edit engagement content on behalf of the communication team.
  • Monitor and measure the effectiveness of different communication channels and methodologies to drive a culture of continuous improvement.
  • React and respond quickly to major communication issues carrying reputational risk to ensure staff are engaged and supplied with required communication resource and support.
  • Collaborate with the People Team to develop efficient communication, content to improve, maintain employee satisfaction and wellbeing with the charity’s internal communication, as reported in independent surveys.
  • Lead charity-wide internal communication campaigns aimed at aligning employees with the charity's organisational strategy and values.
  • Collaborate with the charity’s brand and marketing team to ensure internal communication activity is aligned with its brand values and identity.
  • Support and empower charity leaders and employees to communicate more effectively by providing internal communication expertise and consultancy.
  • Act as an ambassador of the charity's values, challenging misaligned behaviours and ensuring the values are integrated within communication.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • To be educated in a vocational or communications field short of a degree level or equivalent.
  • A qualification appropriate to the role, a recognised qualification is preferred but not essential.
  • Evidence of continued professional development to the role.
  • Experience of project managing strategic internal communications projects in a corporate or charity setting and seeing them through to completion.
  • Experience in managing stakeholder relationships, and ability to influence senior stakeholders to ensure communication output is coordinated and meets organisational objectives.
  • A good understanding of the charity sector and its priorities and challenges.
  • Experience in simplifying complex content into accessible forms to be followed and understood by a range of audiences.
  • Confident with Microsoft Sharepoint, including site building and management, and associated apps including Stream, Forms and Teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • A good understanding of responsibilities under GDPR in relation to employee personal data.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to guide multiple projects to meet strategic goals.
  • A collaborative team player who shows flexibility and an eagerness for new challenges.
