Position: Communications Manager
Salary: £40 – 45,000 FTE
Hours: Full-time (35 hours per week)
Location: Remote/Home based with occasional travel to Salisbury, Wiltshire.
About us
The Property Ombudsman provides an impartial and independent Ombudsman service, helping to resolve disputes between consumers and property professionals. We are the only Ombudsman scheme in the property professional sector and, as a not-for-profit organisation, we have been providing our service since 1990.
Purpose of the role
In our newly created role as Communications Manager, you will support the Director of Policy and Communications by creating, developing and managing a small communications team to support successful delivery of the external communications and stakeholder engagement strategies.
You will manage the implementation of a comprehensive and innovative external communications strategy and plan that promotes the brand, reputation, and work of TPO and supports the strategic objectives and organisational goals. The post holder will provide external communications support across the organisation, leading on media relations and digital communications.
Main responsibilities of the role:
· Build, develop and manage a small and multi-functional team to raise awareness of our service amongst property consumers and property businesses, building their understanding and trust in what we do and increase its accessibility.
· Take ownership for the development and delivery of TPO’s external digital presence, including external communication related meetings, website content, social media and platforms for property consumers and businesses, ensure effective channel management to engage audiences in our mission and support our campaigns.
· Manage communications and campaign planning, delivery, and evaluation to deliver maximum impact for TPO’s work.
· Manage the media relations function, providing an effective service to journalists, preparing content and quality assuring the work of the communications team. Provide advice on media handling and deal with reputational risk.
· Prepare presentations and speaking notes for events where senior members of staff are speaking. Managing the communications team to produce these as needed and sourcing and commissioning supporting content from other internal teams.
· Contribute to the delivery of the workstreams that support the External Engagement Strategy where appropriate.
· Manage the information reporting from external communication workstreams, ensuring it is regularly provided in a structured format that highlights pertinent issues, areas for development and measures the impact of TPO communication activities and initiatives.
· Deputise for the Director as required.
We are looking for:
· Professional communications experience in an organisation with a high public profile and a track record of advising at the most senior level.
· Experience of working with the media in a high profile, national organisation including an up-to-date knowledge of social media and the way it can work alongside traditional media.
· Proven ability to develop and deliver high quality and innovative strategic communication campaigns and powerful storytelling communications internally and externally across a range of channels with a track record in evaluation to ensure efficient and effective use of resources.
· Proven ability to translate complex and sensitive information and communicating it effectively and appropriately to a range of audiences.
· Understanding of the wider social, political, and economic environment and their impact on the issues, implications and challenges facing organisations providing a public service.
· Strong analytical skill set, with the ability to interpret data to draw effective conclusions.
· High level of IT and social media literacy.
- A general level of education at degree or professional level, or the equivalent level of attainment gained through professional experience
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to build, inspire and lead a team through a period of growth and transformation
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to build strong and collaborative internal and external relationships
- Ability to introduce innovative ideas and challenge current practices in a cooperative manner
- Able to work under pressure, prioritise workload and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, challenging environment
· A proven ability to work collaboratively and achieve results whilst working
· Experience of managing change and achieving results.
· Experience in risk management.
· Budget management.
Desirable experience
· Experience of multi-stakeholder communication, including communicating to a large membership base, industry, consumer, and government stakeholders
· Good understanding of the property sector, including market developments and regulatory framework.
· Good understanding of the role, principles, and governance arrangements of ombudsmen, redress, and ADR schemes.
· Good understanding of government including its political decision-making processes.
- Experience in business planning and quality assurance
