Position Summary:
KFF is a nonprofit leader in health policy analysis, polling and survey research, and health journalism. Its mission is to fill the need for trusted information on national health issues. KFF serves as a nonpartisan source of facts, information, and analysis for policymakers, the health care community, and the public.
KFF is seeking a Communications Associate who will support a range of external communications activities to promote KFF’s work. This is a cross-functional role for a creative, flexible, and dynamic professional who would like to grow their skills across a variety of areas, including media relations, stakeholder engagement, media and legislative monitoring, and digital communications. The successful candidate will enjoy being an integral part of the Communications team, working across the department and the full organization to contribute to meaningful health policy communications to strengthen KFF’s impact. This position reports to the Director of Communications, who is based in Washington, DC. The candidate may be based in San Francisco, CA (preferred) or Washington, D.C.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Working with KFF’s communication team to implement strategies and tactics to promote the work of KFF, including its policy analysis, polling, and journalism, to key audiences.
- Tracking Congressional hearings and other legislative developments, external events, and policy developments relevant to KFF’s work.
- Copyediting news releases, event advisories, and other communications for accuracy and effectiveness, and preparing them to send to appropriate subscribers through our CRM platform (HubSpot), and to publish on the kff.org website via our CMS (WordPress).
- Developing and updating targeted lists of media, Congressional, administration and organizational contacts, and managing contacts and subscriptions in HubSpot.
- Monitoring media coverage and tracking media engagement and opportunities, including broadcast media.
- Drafting and preparing targeted communications to highlight KFF’s work to relevant audiences, including national and state policymakers and organizations.
- Helping to organize and schedule meetings with external audiences and to plan and execute public in-person and virtual events.
- Collaborating effectively across the full organization in both the San Francisco and Washington, D.C. offices, and within the communications team, often working on multiple projects with overlapping deadlines.
- Contributing to other communications initiatives and projects, as needed, including basic tasks related to website and social analytics, digital communications and marketing, and other organizational needs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- At least two years of experience working in communications, public relations, and/or marketing.
- A demonstrated ability to understand policy issues and research. Knowledge and experience in health policy is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and the proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment where priorities often shift quickly based on external and internal factors.
- Some experience with media engagement is desired.
- Experience using digital and social media communications tools, including contact and email management systems, website content management systems, media monitoring, and web and social analytic tools. Proficiency with systems such as HubSpot, WordPress, Meltwater and/or Google Analytics is a plus.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work both collaboratively across the communications team and KFF’s program areas.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
KFF is currently working a hybrid schedule and requires all staff to work in the office 2 days a week. Limited overnight travel for occasional meetings and conferences may be required.
Compensation
KFF provides a compensation package that is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The annual salary range for the Communications Associate position is between $70,000 and $85,000. Offers are based on the candidate's years of experience and KFF’s practice of upholding salary equity. KFF also offers a generous, comprehensive benefits package.
