The Apprenticeship
This is a unique opportunity to join the Commercial Team at Tata Steel Colors UK as a Commercial Apprentice. The Apprenticeship is for 2 years and during this time you will gain experience across the commercial function in areas such as commercial services, marketing, customer technical services, scheduling and supply chain. The candidate will also have the opportunity to understand the production process by spending time on the production line and have an opportunity to understand our downstream operations within Tata Steel Building Systems UK.
Our expectation is that we provide a platform for our apprentices to learn and develop and achieve their full potential.
The role will initially rotate through various business departments, including commercial services, marketing, customer technical services, scheduling and supply chain to enable the apprentice to develop a robust knowledge of our business strategy, our products and commercial systems and processes.
The apprentice will have a generic role designed to build their skills and knowledge with a view that at the end of the programme they will have developed sufficient capability to progress into a commercial role.
They will develop a wide range of skills and knowledge on the company products and processes, whilst also gaining an appreciation of commercial considerations and skills required to perform in our organisation. The apprentice will be involved with, but not exclusively:
- Working within the Customer Services team to obtain a detailed understanding of key processes such as order placements, acknowledgement, managing and maintaining an order book and planning deliveries.
- Developing an in depth understanding of SAP system and other IT systems within the company.
- Understanding guidelines from Tata policies such as Product Policy, credit, capacity, purchase orders and compliance to customer requirements.
- Checking and ensuring accuracy in customer orders.
- Work closely with Account Managers to understand their role and support them with customer activities such as processing orders, changes, and analysis.
- Learning how to identify critical service issues and how to resolve these.
- Understanding forecasting, demand planning and delivery and stock management.
- Become fully aware of the Tata Steel Health and Safety policy.
- Working within the Colorcoat® Marketing team to maximise awareness of our products and services through activities such as case studies of buildings, supporting social media content, presentations, websites, and market research.
- Working within Customer Technical Services to understand product quality issues, the impact on customers and new development requirements within our customer base.
Commercial apprentices will study for a diploma in Business Administration Level 2 in year 1, which will progress to level 3 in year 2. The qualification will be undertaken and assessed by College Cambria Business School, the Apprentice will be given a departmental mentor and be part of a wider network of Tata steel Colors apprentices based at Shotton.
Working hours will Monday-Thursday 08:30am-4:45pm and Friday 08:30am-3.45pm
The Candidate
To be considered for the Commercial Apprenticeship you will need to have 5 GCSE or equivalent (including English, Maths and Science) at Grades A* - C or level 4-9.
3 A levels at grade C or above or equivalent.
Applicants should preferably have some knowledge of the products we produce and the markets we supply. Knowledge of the works computer system (SAP) is advantageous but not a pre-requisite. A good understanding of Microsoft office and established IT skills are desirable.
The jobholder should be a self-starter and demonstrate a proactive attitude to work and a willingness to learn. The jobholder should also possess a drive to achieve the objectives / targets of the department.
