Thhis is a 1.0 FTE position located at the Syphax Education Center in the Department of Teaching and Learning . This position is a grant funded position on the Teacher’s salary schedule in the Office of Academics. The teacher works under the direction English Language Arts Supervisor.
The Elementary Literacy Coach supports high quality, consistent implementation of curriculum, instructional practices and resources, assessment practices, and professional learning across all elementary/middle schools as it relates to English Language Arts. The Literacy Coach provides school-based coaching and support for individual teachers and teacher teams.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Supports teachers in implementing an effective classroom literacy program by:
- Supporting job-embedded professional learning through coaching; modeling and co-teaching as appropriate, and providing feedback to teachers.
- Monitoring and analyzing student achievement results.
- Developing daily and long-range plans and strategies with teachers.
- Developing organizational and flexible grouping procedures with teachers.
- Demonstrating teaching strategies and methods for teachers through m odel lessons with students.
- Coordinating and facilitating communication about literacy across grade levels and within grade levels.
- Planning and providing appropriate professional learning to Grade K-8 teachers.
- Providing assistance to classroom teachers in implementing ideas and techniques gained through the professional learning provided.
- Facilitating parent and teacher communication about literacy.
- Experience and willingness to conduct model lessons.
- At least five years of teaching experience in Grades K-8.
The applicant shall provide a transcript that specifies graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in education or closely related field of study. Master’s degree is preferred. Credentials shall include, at the minimum, strong academic preparation in elementary or middle school education with a concentration in reading and/or language arts; and/or an endorsement in Elementary, K-8, or other combination of related
endorsement(s) preferred. An endorsement as a reading specialist is highly preferred.
- Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure.
- Strong content knowledge in literacy and the Science of Reading.
- Knowledge and experience with current best practices in the teaching of reading.
- Documented professional development in literacy as a participant and as a leader.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member with colleagues.
- Ability to analyze student performance data.
- Dual endorsement in English as a Second Language and/or Special Education, or in any other content area, is preferred but not required.
