Job summary
As health and social care issues affect us all, the work of the Department of Health and Social Care is always at the forefront of the public’s mind.
We are looking for a fixed term Chief Marketing Officer who can hit the ground running as part of a small, high performing team in an exciting fast paced communications environment for the next six months.
Applicants will be required to have substantial and demonstrative experience of activating audience tailored campaigns across advertising, PR, social, digital and partnerships. You will also have a track record of delivering qualitative and quantitative research to inform campaign development and evaluation.
This is an opportunity to work in a friendly and welcoming team where you will get end to end experience delivering a flagship campaign to support the government’s exciting ‘Patient Choice’ commitments.
Job description
This newly created fixed term role, for six months, will lead activation of our forthcoming Patient Choice campaign. This includes:
- Development and delivery of an innovative and impactful multi-channel marketing campaign.
- Securing buy-in from relevant stakeholders across the health system and government.
- Commissioning and delivery of relevant campaign research and evaluation.
- Provision of effective project, budget and agency management; as well as campaign assurance.
- Line management of a Senior Campaigns Manager.

Key skills and experience required for the role
You’ll be a professional marketeer with:
- Substantial experience of integrated campaign activation across advertising, PR, social, digital and partnerships – to deliver measurable impact.
- An ability to communicate effectively with different audiences including using insight.
- Expertise in qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation.
- The ability to build and maintain networks with counterparts in other organisations.
- Strong communications and project/agency management skills.
- An ability to remain calm under pressure, prioritise workload and deal with competing priorities.
Desirable experience:
- Experience of integrated campaign activation across advertising, PR, social, digital and partnerships

New Entrants to the Civil Service
New entrants appointed in grades AA to G6 will receive DHSC’s modernised terms and conditions:
- Annual Leave: 25 days on entry rising by one day for each completed year of service to a maximum of 30 days and pro-rata for part-time staff
- Privilege Leave: 1 day - for the King’s birthday
- Hours of Work: 37 hours (net) per week for full time staff in all geographical locations, including London and pro rata for part-time staff
- Occupational Sick Pay (OSP): one month full pay/one month half pay on entry, rising by one month for each completed year of service to a maximum of five months’ full pay and five months’ half pay
- Mobility: Mobility clause in contracts allow staff to be mobile across the Civil Service
- Probation: 6 month probation period
