The cloud platform service is a core to the wider Digital Strategy of the Scottish Government helping valuable public services to be delivered securely, efficiently in an accessible way.

Responsibilities:

The Cloud engineer will be part of a feature team responsible for the delivery of AWS & Azure resources and solutions, delivered as Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

Cloud engineers:
  • Work in a team of infrastructure specialists and engineers ensuring services are integrated, delivered and operated as required and to a high standard
  • Work with technical architects to translate architectural designs into robust technical solutions
  • Are involved with the on-going build and maintenance of SG Cloud Platform resources and solutions
  • Assist in the creation of the SG Cloud Platform, utilising appropriate toolsets to identify, troubleshoot, and remedy complex issues where necessary
  • Work with network and cyber security specialists to ensure the SG Cloud Platform is secure and protected from vulnerabilities, including zero-day vulnerabilities
  • Plan, schedule, test, deploy, and control software releases whilst maintaining the integrity of the production environment, in accordance with release and change management procedures
  • Develop all necessary pipelines and tooling to support the SG Cloud Platform DevOps cloud practices
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of this area of the ICT specialism, enabling them to suggest appropriate performance enhancements, modernisation and efficiencies. The post holder(s) will also be required to keep their skills current, and to demonstrate an innovative approach to the development of other areas of technology which have a bearing on the provision of services for the SG Cloud Platform
  • Liaise with vendors to identify solutions to complex issues where appropriate.

Essential Criteria & Qualifications:
No formal qualifications are required, the essential criteria for this role are: -

  • Knowledge of AWS or Azure Governance (e.g. Control Tower, Blueprints, Organizations, Policies)
  • Experience in Identity Access Management such as ( AWS IAM, Cognito; Azure Active Directory, B2B, B2C) and integration with other IDP’s such as Okta
  • Working knowledge of platform and application automated deployment technologies (Infrastructure as Code) such as (AWS CLI, Azure CLI, Powershell, ARM Templates, Bicep, Terraform) and exposure to continuous integration and build tools (e.g. Jenkins, Github Actions, VS Code or similar)
  • Good understanding of infrastructure, network, and application security including understanding of OWASP objectives and requirements, configuration of firewalls, load balancers and general networking awareness and Cloud Security tools such as (Inspector, Defender for cloud; Shield, DDoS Protection Service; Security Hub, Sentinel etc.)

We operate a flexible location policy, with a named base in Scotland. Staff are assigned to the base office, however there may be a need for travel to other Scottish Government offices/other locations depending on assigned work.

We provide an attractive package with extensive benefits: -

  • Salary between £41,642 and £49,860
  • £5000 Digital (DDaT) Pay Supplement after a 3 month qualifying period ***
  • Generous Pension Scheme with employer contributions ranging from 26.6% to 30.3%
  • Flexible working arrangements including compressed hours and flexi time, with potential to accrue up to 4 days off a month
  • 25 Days Annual Leave (increasing in line with service) plus 11.5 days Public & Privilege holidays

***DDaT Pay Supplement:

This post attracts a £5000 DDAT pay supplement after a 3 months DDaT competency qualifying period. Pay supplements are temporary payments and are subject to regular review.
