Job Purpose
To contribute to the activities of the Division of Equine Clinical Sciences, School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine by developing, managing, and contributing to the clinical service offered by Glasgow Equine Practice.
The practice's values reflect those of the Division: delivery of high quality patient care through the application of evidence-based medicine and a high standard of customer service; provision of a fulfilling student learning experience; and staff development through engagement with scholarship.
The practice contributes to the Division's and School's activities in the following areas:
- Teaching and assessment of students, focusing on final year students in a practice setting.
- Supporting and increasing the caseload of Glasgow Equine Hospital.
- Enhancement of the Division's and School's reputation through delivery of high quality patient care and customer service.
- Collaborative clinical research.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
1. To develop further and contribute to the clinical service offered by Glasgow Equine Practice.
2. To develop and continually update personal skills and knowledge as appropriate to equine practice in support of clinical, teaching and scholarship activities.
3. To develop clinical activity which stimulates growth in practice caseload and Glasgow Equine Hospital caseload through referral of patients
4. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the practice.
5. To participate in the practice's out-of-hours service, ensuring adequate cover. This is currently a 1 in 4 rota, which is subject to change.
6. To ensure that clinical quality assurance measures are in place and validated.
7. To provide leadership to staff associated with the practice.
8. To develop a prominent professional profile locally and nationally/internationally, focusing on areas where there is synergy with the Division's and School's activities.
9. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in relationship to membership and to maintenance of any postgraduate qualifications.
Teaching
10. To contribute to the planning, organisation, delivery and development of the School's learning and teaching activities, focusing on final year BVMS students in the practice setting, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course leaders
11.To contribute to the delivery of a range of assessment activities (using a variety of methods and techniques), engage fully in the examination process and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning
12.To develop, and encourage the development of, creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University's Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.
Scholarship
13.To complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and other components of the Early Career Development Programme at the University of Glasgow.
14.To engage in personal scholarship which is synergistic with day-to-day activities resulting in personal development and an enhanced external reputation.
15.To develop opportunities for interdisciplinary and collaborative clinical research, primarily with staff within the Division, School and wider University but also with staff in other Schools, Colleges, Universities and other clinical organisations where appropriate.
16.To contribute to clinical research projects/trials through input to design, application for funding, execution and dissemination of findings.
17.To attend and actively contribute/participate in national/international events/ seminars/conferences as appropriate to area of scholarship by invitation or otherwise.
Administration
18.To contribute to the further development and management of a dynamic, high quality, equine 1st opinion practice, by working together with School Management, Professional and Administrative staff to ensure that it runs efficiently.
19. To work towards and then achieve Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' General Practice " Ambulatory • Practice Standards Award for the practice within 2 years.
20. Contribute to performance and development review processes of staff working within the practice in accordance with University Strategy.
21. To act, as directed by the Head of Division, to advance the personal development of staff working within the practice.
In addition to the above for appointment at Grade 8
22.To provide effective leadership to the practice in relation to its development and management.
23.To ensure direct supervision, advice and expertise is provided for the practice team.
24.To facilitate scholarship and provide mentorship to junior clinical staff, staff associated with the practice and assist with the identification, planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements by supervision of clinical duties and research projects.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Veterinary degree, registerable with the RCVS prior to commencing employment.
For appointment at Grade 8
A2 Postgraduate/ further clinical qualification relevant to equine practice, e.g., RCVS Certificate, RCVS Advanced Practitioner status, or evidence of development of advanced clinical skills relevant to equine practice
Desirable
Bl. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, Recognising Excellence in Teaching or equivalent.
B2. Evidence of training and experience in research (MSc/PhD or equivalent).
Skills
Essential
C1. Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality clinical service in equine 1st opinion practice.
C2. Broad expertise of equine practice, corresponding to training, experience and qualifications.
C3. High standard of oral and written communication skills and presentation skills.
C4. Self-motivated, able to think strategically and plan for contingencies.
C5. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

D1. Evidence of interest in and development of business management skills relevant to equine practice.
Experience

E1. Proven experience of management of own case load in equine practice.
E2. Evidence of experience in teaching, especially of veterinary undergraduate students.
E3. Proven experience of communicating clinical information effectively to owners individually in relation to their horses.
For appointment at Grade 8
E4 Evidence of leading initiatives which resulted in an increase in practice caseload. E5 Evidence of supervision and mentorship of junior colleagues.
Desirable
F1. Evidence of contribution to clinical research.
F2. Evidence of participation in initiatives which resulted in an increase in practice caseload. F3. Business management relevant to equine 1st opinion practice.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7/8, £38,474 - £43,155/£47,047 - £54,421 per annum.
This post is full time and open ended.
