It is an exciting time to join the paediatric team at Walsall due to the expansion and progression of the service. PAU is moving to a state-of-the-art purpose-built unit in early 2023, the unit is leading the way in progressing virtual wards and a new team structure is creating a new dynamic way of team working.
The paediatric department comprises of a 21-inpatient ward, a 12 bedded PAU, surgical work, a virtual ward, children community nursing team and outpatient’s department.

1. To provide the highest standard of nursing care for patients under supervision of
a registered nurse.
2. To carry out assigned tasks including direct care and indirect care as delegated
by the nursing team.
3. To support colleagues in the delivery of a high quality care
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

1. Demonstrate effective communication skills both verbal and non verbal.
2. Be able to recognise failures in communication and report to senior staff.
3. Demonstrate high standards in record keeping.
4. Assist in the taking of patient observations and plot accurately on PEWS chart.
5. Escalate any abnormal PEWS result to the registered nurse.
6. Report any changes in the patient’s health status to the registered nurse.
7. Support registered nursing staff with clinical treatments and investigations as
appropriate, to the level of knowledge and skill. This may include the escort of
patients to other departments within the hospital. Ensuring patient safety & dignity
is maintained.
8. Chaperone Patients, during clinical examinations as and when required, ensuring
the patient’s privacy and dignity is maintained throughout.
9. Maintain safe levels of hygiene, both clinical and personal, thus ensuring
adherence to Trust Infection Control Policies e.g: Gloves, protective clothing and
correct hand washing.
10.To comply with the disposal of sharps and clinical waste. Be aware of the correct
procedures for dealing with spillages of bodily fluids in accordance with the Trust
policy.
11.To be aware of how to report incidents within the service.
12.To ensure an appropriate supply of equipment / stock is available on a shift.
13.To undertake clerical and administrative duties in liaison with colleagues as
requested.
14.To monitor stock levels within clinical areas and initiate orders were required.
15.Maintain confidentiality in relation to patients be the information obtained either
verbally, written or electronically.
