Cardiff University, College of Biomedical and Life Sciences, School of Dentistry invites applications for the post of Clinical Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry / Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry or Prosthodontics (full-time).

To support our core activities, we are looking for an individual with excellent skills and the capability to help us implement our School education strategy and the growth of the next generation of dental professionals in Wales. The appointee will lead and develop the teaching provision in Prosthodontics, evolving the School’s postgraduate programme development, ensuring a modern and integrated approach to the teaching of prosthodontics across our suite of postgraduate programmes and contribute to undergraduate restorative dentistry education. The appointee is expected to deliver high-quality research-led teaching at both postgraduate and undergraduate level. This exciting post will support staff to pursue excellence in teaching, scholarship activities relating to prosthodontics, inspiring others to do the same and there will be opportunities for pursuit of research aligned to the School's research areas.

The successful candidate will be awarded an appropriate honorary contract by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Salary: £86,063 - £111,732 per annum (Clinical Grade D6). This position provides eligibility for clinical commitment awards. These are awarded automatically in the absence of an unsatisfactory job plan review once a Consultant has reached top of scale and then at 3 yearly intervals thereafter to a maximum of £138,404 (current basic pay plus top commitment award).

This post is full time (37.5 hours per week), open-ended and available from 1 March 2023.

Main function of post

Cardiff University School of Dentistry is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic senior clinical academic to lead its education and research in the field of Restorative Dentistry.. The appointee will lead and develop the teaching provision in Restorative Dentistry in the School and University, ensuring a modern and integrated approach to the teaching of these subjects. The appointee is expected to deliver high-quality research-led teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. This exciting post will provide opportunity for staff to pursue excellence in teaching and provide opportunity for scholarship activities relating to Restorative Dentistry– and it is expected that the appointee will inspire others to do the same. They will provide academic leadership within the School and will also be required to line manage relevant staff.

Job Description

Depending upon the profile of the successful candidate options are available for the role holder to specialise / lead in teaching and scholarship activities, or alternatively focus on teaching and research activities. The job description below reflects key points in both teaching and research elements. However, we anticipate that a more tailored version of the job description will be issued to the successful candidate.

Provisional Honorary Consultant Job Plan

The job plan will set out a Consultant’s duties, responsibilities, time commitments and accountability arrangements, including all direct clinical care, supporting professional activities and other NHS responsibilities (including managerial). Annual job plan reviews will also be supported by a joint academic / NHS appraisal process which reviews the clinical academic’s work and performance and identifies development needs, as subsequently reflected in a personal development plan.

The post holder will be professionally accountable to the Medical Director and managerially accountable to the Clinical Director of the University Dental Hospital.

Job Description

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching Responsibilities

The post holder will:
1. Be responsible for the leadership and management of the School’s postgraduate Prosthodontics Programme including its development and integration with other postgraduate programmes.
2. Contribute to teaching and assessing prosthodontics on the postgraduate Prosthodontics and undergraduate Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme;
3. Ensure linkage between the didactic and clinical components of the Postgraduate Prosthodontic programme to ensure students become knowledgeable, proficient and ethical practitioners, working with the other PG Programme Leads, Director of Learning and Teaching and Director of Assessment and Feedback;
4. Teach students in clinical skills laboratories;
5. Undertake assessment duties including the development of simulated case reports, written questions, standard settings, mock exams and involvement in oral examinations, working with the Year Leads and Director of Assessment;
6. Develop innovative methods of teaching and learning, including the use of videos, and take a lead in technology enhanced education within Restorative Dentistry ;
7. Deliver didactic teaching in Restorative Dentistry , using a variety of teaching modalities including lectures, tutorials, seminars, and clinical supervision both face-to-face and virtually;
8. Manage the organisation of professional examinations for Restorative Dentistry topics;
9. Supervise/ co-supervise research projects undertaken by UG students and the development of their research and critical appraisal skills;
10. Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums, contributing to Journal clubs to enhance trainees’ critical appraisal skills;
11. Participate in the pedagogic developments related to junior staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students through educational development projects research and audits;
12. Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community;
13. Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and / or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work and to present papers/posters on pedagogical and scholarly subjects at national and international meetings;
14. Pursue research that is linked to the research groups within the School of Dentistry and College of Biomedical & Life Sciences or pedagogical research related to the education and training of postgraduate students; and
15. Ensure recruitment of patients and adequate allocation to students to match skills development at various levels of training, ensuring trainees comply with the required standards.

1. Undertake and lead educational research, pedagogical evaluation and scholarly activity, leading to high quality research and outputs; and

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

All candidates (Clinical Teaching and Scholarship AND Clinical Teaching and Research Applicants) should:

1. Possess a BDS (or equivalent) degree, full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC).
2. Registration on the specialist list in Restorative Dentistry or Prosthodontics of the GDC demonstrating specialist-level clinical skills.
3. Have achieved a postgraduate qualification in a related subject area; postgraduate degree at PhD level in the related area or significant other relevant experience with evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
4. Be able to demonstrate, perform and supervise clinical procedures in Restorative Dentistry or Prosthodontics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
5. Have an established national and developing international reputation within academic field.
6. Be able to demonstrate knowledge of clinical and research governance and good clinical practice criteria and evidence of actively engaging clinical and research governance activities.
7. Show evidence of significant post qualification experience of working within Restorative Dentistry within a specialist practice environment and/or hospital environment.
8. Show evidence of their ability to manage, lead and develop a specialist clinical service and the ability to demonstrate clinical procedures at a specialist level.
9. Have a proven record of academic leadership.

Candidates should:

1. Have significant teaching experience at a high level of quality at undergraduate/ postgraduate levels with a proven record of academic programme leadership.
2. Possess demonstrable potential leadership skills with the ability to inspire and contribute to School teaching strategy and experience in motivating and engaging both academic and clinical staff and students at all levels.
3. Show evidence of the ability to participate in, and develop, both internal and external networks and use them to enhance the activities of the School.
4. Demonstrate evidence of professional practice in higher education institute with personal and institutional commitment to professionalism in learning and teaching in higher education.

1. Have well-established expertise and a significant proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience in the field of health services research.
2. Demonstrate a proven track record of high-impact (REF suitable) publications and proven record of contributing, developing and leading successful research bids.
3. Have the ability to mobilise knowledge from research, through engagement with NHS, public, policy and other stakeholders to establish a “Pathway to Impact”.

1. Develop and sustain an innovative, ground breaking, independent, collaborative health services research programme of international excellence;
2. Demonstrate international research recognition through, for example, visiting fellowships, plenary papers, membership of international research or professional bodies, advising or giving expert opinion;
3. Play a leading role in obtaining external funding with sustained levels of external funding to support the research programme. To publish results arising from it in relevant, international peer-reviewed journals;
4. Develop new research and research-funding initiatives, including through interaction with NHS-based projects;
5. Contribute strongly to the School of Dentistry’s Research Excellence Framework strategy, with sustained high impact publication at 3* and 4* outputs, and to contribute to Impact Case(s);
6. Provide sustained PhD supervision and actively support completed submission within 4-year period and acting as a PGR progress review panel member as required;
7. Act as a REF mentor for junior academic staff; and
8. Actively mentor and support postdoctoral research staff.

Clinical Duties

The post holder will:
1. Hold an appropriate honorary Consultant contract with the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board;
2. Provide clinical leadership and a consultant-led service in either Restorative Dentistry or Prosthodontics;;
3. Provide direct clinical care and support professional activities in line with the provisions of the amended Consultant Contract for Wales;
4. Participate in the Joint Appraisal Process and Personal Development Reviews (PDR);
5. Undertake the professional supervision and management of junior staff in the field of Restorative Dentistry or Prosthodontics. If appropriate, the post holder will be named in the contracts of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training;
6. Enable junior staff to develop a specialist interest in specific aspects of Restorative Dentistry or Prosthodontics;
7. Ensure that arrangements are in place for adequate staff to be available in relation to the treatment and care of patients. Appropriate arrangements for continuity of patient care (e.g. cover for leave and/or academic sessions) will be via mutual agreement with Colleagues;
8. Take an active role in the development of Restorative Dentistry or Prosthodontic services as appropriate, ensuring national and regional directives and guidance are incorporated into local practice and planning;
9. Disseminate information about Restorative Dentistry or Prosthodontic issues through educational programmes (postgraduate/undergraduate), both locally and in other University Schools where an awareness of is required;
10. Undertake administrative duties associated with NHS clinical activities, complying with all NHS policies and procedures; and
11. Participate in the management/medical audit requirements of the speciality of Restorative Dentistry or Prosthodontics in liaison with colleagues and in line with the University Health Board policy on the implementation of clinical governance.
