Job description

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to take part in a wide range of ongoing research as part of the newly formed Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Team (IDCRT), based at St Mary’s Hospital, and working across the Imperial Healthcare Trust NHS Trust. The Fellow will have the opportunity to take part in a wide portfolio of ongoing clinical research in acute infection working under the supervision of Dr Claire Waddington (Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer) and Professor Graham Cooke (Professor of Infectious Diseases and Consultant in Infectious Diseases) in the Department of Infectious Disease.

Responsibilities will include the development and co-ordination of clinical research studies, including several randomised controlled clinical trials of novel therapeutics and diagnostics for both viral and bacterial infections, platform studies, and observational cohort studies. The post provides experience of clinical research in a multi-disciplinary clinical research environment. The post holder will be working alongside and responsible for supporting and developing the wider team including clinical research nurses and practitioners. The IDCRT is works closely with the clinical infectious diseases team, and the post holder will have the opportunity to contribute to the clinical care of patients and participate in wider professional development and educational opportunities within both the clinical and research teams.

The Fellow will have the opportunity to lead on the development of study protocols needed in the preparation and submission of ethics, regulatory and grant applications and having responsibility for the day-to-day clinical governance of allocated clinical trials.

The successful postholder will contribute to a 24-hour on-call service for adult study participants which includes out-of-hours clinical visits and may include laboratory processing of participant samples.

Candidates interested in pursuing further research beyond the currently advertised post will be given the opportunity to independent research funding and develop laboratory, clinical or translational research proposals.

Duties and responsibilities



  • Management and co-ordination of studies focussed on diagnosis, pathogenesis and therapeutics for acute infectious diseases

  • Recruitment of patients into projects and collection of relevant clinical data

  • Development of systems for routine collection an analysis of clinical data in partnership with IT team of ICHT

  • Liaison (through meeting and teleconferences) with key project partners in other academic health centres to ensure co-ordination of work and timely analysis of data

  • To support development of new clinical studies on acute infection

  • To attend medical emergencies if required e.g., cardiac arrest, resuscitation

  • To provide cross-cover of medical colleagues working within the clinical trials unit on other studies in their absence

  • To act as medical support to nursing staff, potentially supporting other research projects within the trials unit

  • Ensuring that the Consultants and Principal Investigators are kept well informed of study progress and participant wellbeing

  • Maintain good communications with nursing and paramedical staff on all aspects of patient and participant care

  • To organise and take part in teaching sessions and clinical meetings

  • To develop links with the clinical services to enhance enrolment and recruitment into clinical trials within the department

  • To provide screening and follow up medical care and documentation and accurate completion of study CRFs in accordance with clinical trial study protocols and provide medical care in accordance with GCP

  • To ensure up to date training in current GCP practices

Essential requirements



  • Must hold GMC (General Medical Council) registration

  • Medical degree with a GMC registration;

  • Experience in the clinical management of patients, particularly those with acute infection, and commitment to a period of clinical research;

  • Ability to provide accurate and appropriate medical care for patients enrolled in clinical studies;

  • Ability to exercise initiative, work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, or independently

  • Flexible, with good organisational skills and an ability to communicate with a wide range of people at varied levels;

  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload and work under pressure to meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy

This is a Full Time and Fixed Term post - 1 post available immediately until 3rdAugust 2023 and 2nd post from 3rdAugust 2023 for 6 months.

The successful applicant will be given an Honorary Clinical Contract with the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and/or Chelsea and Westminster Foundation NHS Trust and will work across relevant sites in West London.

Candidates may wish to apply for both positions.

Please note, if you’re not on an approved NHS training programme you will be appointed on the Clinical staff not holding consultant contracts salary scale.
