Job Purpose
This is a fixed term Clinical Lectureship in Obstetrics & Gynaecology tenable in the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing at the University of Glasgow. Suitable applicants will hold MRCOG Part 2 (UK)/or equivalent.
The successful candidate will be appointed at the appropriate level of Specialty Trainee and will enter the West of Scotland Obstetrics & Gynaecology Training Programme. Applicants must already have a national training number at the time of taking up the post
The post will be based within the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) of the University of Glasgow, but for the purposes of clinical training, rotation to local hospital departments may be required. Where possible the lecturer will be based in Glasgow to maximise research opportunities, but clinical activities and research may also be undertaken on other sites.
This post will provide an exceptional opportunity for combined clinical and academic training, the latter in the world class academic environment of the University of Glasgow. First class clinical training will also be available and will support the appointee pursuing a certificate of completion of training (CCT) in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Research opportunities and appropriate training are available across a broad range of research fields, including reproductive medicine, maternal fetal-medicine, as well as research work at the interface between women’s health and oncology and cardiovascular medicine. If the appointee does not possess an MD or PhD, they will be supported in developing an appropriate project, pursuing any necessary funding and executing research suitable for submission of a post-graduate degree. Supervision arrangements for doctoral study will depend on the area of interest.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Research
The appointee will have an established interest in research with a record of achievement in an area relevant to existing interests in School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing within the College of MVLS. The appointee will be expected to:
  • Develop a programme of research under appropriate supervision as set out above.
  • Plan, design and implement projects with collaborators as appropriate; and to contribute to and submit grant applications and publications in high quality journals.
There are extensive data science, laboratory and clinical facilities for research within the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing, College of MVLS, and related Schools within the University of Glasgow. Opportunities for participation in long-term collaborations both within and external to the College of MVLS also exist.
Teaching
It is expected that the Lecturer will contribute to the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities. Teaching is led by permanent clinical staff and as such a contribution is expected, from this research focused role. Anticipated activities will include;
  • Teaching of clinical skills and other vocational training activities, including seminars and tutorials.
  • Lecturers may also contribute to postgraduate taught courses within the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing, College of MVLS.
  • The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing teaching commitment within the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing.
Administrative Duties
The Lecturer will contribute to administrative duties related to research and teaching as directed by their supervisor
Clinical Duties
Clinical duties will be arranged following discussion with the relevant Training Programme Director in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The purpose of a Clinical Lectureship is to ensure that candidates acquire a CCT, and appropriate clinical training opportunities will be arranged to ensure that this can occur within the duration of the Lectureship. This may involve candidates in clinical duties in various locations within Glasgow. This will involve covering both central teaching and peripheral hospitals. The clinical activity will vary depending on the hospital location, the service needs and the lecturer’s clinical aspirations within Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Clinical academic training will be the focus of the post with a maximum 80:20 split between clinical and academic activity.
Academic support will be available during all annual research and training assessments to ensure that there is adequate balance between academic and clinical training.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1. MB ChB or equivalent and full registration with General Medical Council. (for non UK candidates, GMC registration would be required before taking up the post).
A2. MRCOG Part 2 (UK) or equivalent. A3. Completed ST1 and ST2 raining in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
A4. Applicants must already have a national training number at the time of taking up the post.
Desirable:
B1. BMedSci, BSc, MSc or equivalent intercalated degree in medicine or related subject.
B2. MD or PhD awarded or submitted.
Experience/Training
Essential:
C1. Clinical experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology or related specialties following completion of ST2. C2. Clinical or relevant laboratory research experience.
Desirable:
D1. Experience and aptitude for initiating a research programme in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. D2. An interest in a sub-speciality related to the research interests represented in the School as related above.
D3. Previous evidence of oral and poster presentations. D4. Evidence of publication or experience in writing.
D5. An interest in teaching and learning in medicine.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be on the Clinical Academic scale £38,704 - £57,349 per annum.
The post will carry an additional entitlement depending on on-call responsibilities. This banding payment is paid under a separate arrangement with the NHS for which the University acts as paymaster only.
This post is full time and fixed term for up to 6 years.
