Job Description

Role description: Sue Young Cancer Support in Leicestershire and Rutland (SYCS) has been delivering services in Leicestershire since 1981 to anyone affected by cancer, this being the patient, their family members or carers. The Clinical Lead will oversee the running of the counselling and supervision services and hold clinical responsibility for counselling and supervision work done.

We offer from trainee to accredited supervisors the opportunity to offer clinical supervision to trainee to accredited volunteer counsellors who offer long term (up to

56 sessions) counselling to either those who have experienced cancer or those who have supported or are affected by cancer such as family members and carers. We operate this service from Monday- Friday during the day and have some evening sessions.

We have several rooms for supervision and counselling at our head office in

Leicester. We offer a confidential, integrative supervision and counselling service providing all volunteers opportunity to practice autonomously using a supervision/counselling model best suited to them.

Overall responsibilities

  • To hold clinical responsibility for therapeutic and supervisor practices within the counselling service.
  • To provide leadership and support around the delivery of services
  • To comply with the SYCS counselling service policy and procedure and deliver supervision in accordance with this.
  • To be the appointed Safeguarding Lead for the counselling service when onsite and deal with any issues as and when they arise with the safeguarding team in SYCS.
  • To build and maintain positive trusting relationships with counsellors, supervisors and the wider team within SYCS.
  • To maintain confidentiality appropriately, in accordance with the confidentiality policy.
  • To keep accurate records of supervision sessions, meetings and regarding other matters that may arise within the service in compliance with GDPR legislation.
  • To comply with SYCS’s Diversity and Equality policy and the British

Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and other appropriate body’s ethical frameworks in every aspect of your work and positively promote the principles of these amongst colleagues, clients, volunteers and other members of the community

  • To comply with SYCS’s health and safety policy , data protection policy and protect your own and other’s health safety and welfare
  • To ensure you have an understanding of and comply with CWC’s procedures for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
  • Updating policies and procedures regarding the counselling provision at SYCS following consultation with the Operations Manager
  • To be responsible for your own supervision of the work you do at SYCS which will be funded by the Charity
  • To meet regularly with the Operations Manager to discuss service development and any other issues.
  • To deal with any issues arising around the counselling and to do any other work as and when as part of this role.
  • Dealing with any enquiries related to the counselling service.

Supervision

  • Dealing with the supervisor’s team, allocation of counsellors to supervisors and any other matters that may arise.
  • Chairing bi-monthly supervisor meetings to keep supervisors updated on service development, review of supervision caseload and to provide an opportunity to meet with peers.
  • To provide individual supervision to counsellors to some of the counselling team where you offer support to counsellors in developing themselves and providing a space for them to explore their client caseload.
  • To comply with the SYCS supervision working agreement with counsellors offering supervision to.

Counsellors

  • To attend and chair 6-8 weekly volunteer counsellor meetings so that you are able to keep counsellors appraised of developments within the service and opportunity for CPD to be coordinated.
  • To have the responsibility of allocating clients on a priority and type of counsellor level.
  • To meet with Volunteer Coordinator to discuss issues arising around recruitment of volunteer counsellors and supervisors.
  • To induct new supervisors and counsellors into the service
  • Where needed to offer management supervision to trainee counsellors primarily and other counsellors as and when needed

Other

  • To carry out any duties as and when needed as part of the development of the service and as deemed by the Board.

Clinical Lead

Person Specification

Essential

  • Must hold a post-graduate level qualification (Degree level or Level 4 Diploma) in a counselling qualification approved by a regulated body (e.g. BACP,

UKCP, BPS).

  • To be an accredited counsellor with at least 6 years post qualification experience
  • To be a qualified or accredited supervisor who has completed at least 3 years of experience in supervision.
  • To have experience of working with loss within your previous experience
  • To be competent in using a theoretical model for counselling and supervision
  • To demonstrate experience of supporting vulnerable adults in a professional capacity and being able offer clear advice regarding safeguarding and risk related issues
  • To demonstrate a non-judgemental, congruent and respectful approach
  • To evidence strong abilities in communication both verbal and written
  • To be willing to work within BACP and other associated body guidelines
  • To demonstrate a strong awareness of own emotions and be responsible for own self care
  • To be able to demonstrate an understanding of equality and diversity issues
  • To have experience of dealing with safeguarding and risk related issues
  • To have an understanding of health and safety issues within the workplace and counselling team
  • To be able to demonstrate leadership qualities in taking on governance and responsibility of a service
  • To have good organisation skills and be able to prioritise own work.
  • To be able work on your own initiative

Desirable

  • To have experience/understanding of working with adults affected by cancer
  • To have experience in devising policies and procedures
  • To have experience of recruitment, selection and induction of volunteers

Notice period of termination by either side is 3 months.

Salary: £35,000 - £39,000 depending upon experience
