Consultant Clinical Scientist

Job Summary
This is a great opportunity to act as a Consultant Clinical Scientist in Transfusion Science with joint appointment between NHSBT and Barts Health NHS Trust.
At NHSBT you will be a member of the Red Cell Immunohematology (RCI) senior management team to ensure safe and clinically effective use of red cells and other blood components. You will provide scientific and expert advice to internal and external customers to NHSBT. Your knowledge and experience will ensure that the NHSBT will remains a centre of excellence in transfusion science.
At Barts Health Trust you will be part of a transfusion team that includes 2 other Transfusion Consultants providing transfusion services at four of its hospitals. You will lead a multi-disciplinary team in transfusion, working closely with clinical and laboratory colleagues in the trust to promote patient blood management, the appropriate and safe use of blood transfusion for patients, and to ensure both cost-effective and timely management of the blood component therapy and transfusion tests for the benefit of patients.
Main duties of the job
This is a joint appointment between NHSBT and Barts Health NHS Trust. The employer is NHSBT. You will have an honorary consultant contract with Barts Health NHS Trust.
NHSBT (5 programmed activities)
You will be a member of the Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) senior management team and be responsible for the integrity of the scientific and technical knowledge base applicable to transfusion and transplantation, and its integration into practice, at a level comparable to that of a consultant medic.
Barts Health NHS Trust (5 programme activities)
You will be part of a transfusion team that includes 2 other Consultants at Barts Health Trust providing a transfusion service at four hospitals. You will provide clinical leadership and advice in all clinical/laboratory aspects of transfusion medicine and work with clinical and laboratory colleagues across the Trust to harmonize transfusion services on all sites. You will participate in teaching programme, research, and take responsibility for the strategic and operational planning of transfusion services at Barts Health Trust and partners.
About You
Experience and Knowledge
- In depth knowledge of transfusion science
- Thorough knowledge of all aspects of Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) and clinical transfusion, including associated technical skills gained through at substantial post registration experience
- Understanding of the NHS and wider healthcare community
- Understanding of budget management
- In depth understanding of relevant policies, standards and guidelines, e.g. Good Manufacturing Practice, Good Laboratory Practice, ISO15189 (UKAS), BSQR, and BSH and other relevant or statutory guidelines
- Management and Leadership skills
Qualifications and Training
- Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registered Clinical Scientist (which must be maintained)
- MSc in transfusion or transplantation or appropriate specialism
- DClinSci or D Prof or relevant PhD either completed or demonstrably within 1 year of completion
- FRCPath in Transfusion Science
- Registered in the Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS) Higher Specialist Scientific register in the relevant discipline
