Nectar360 is a loyalty, data, and marketing services business. Our 1st party data (Nectar) is the key to unlocking customer understanding across the various Sainsbury’s businesses and supplier base (FMCG and GM brands) – our clients.

The commercial team in Nectar360 is responsible for how we combine, leverage, and commercialise data and media. Ensuring that Nectar360 remains relevant in a rapidly changing market where digital first thinking has become the norm, and the understanding of customer is a key differentiator.

The colleague will be working in one of the fastest growing and dynamic areas of the business, supporting us in driving significant profit growth from Nectar360’s data-driven media and digital offering – in and around store, onsite (Sainsbury’s & Argos e-Commerce) and offsite (our Digital Trading Platform (DTP)) monetisation.

This role will be on a fixed term basis for 12 months to cover maternity leave and we anticipate start dates to be late November/early December 2023

The colleague will need a unique blend of data literacy, traditional shopper marketing and digital channel knowledge, relationship building expertise, commercial drive, and stakeholder management to be successful in this role. They will be a strategic thinker, with a passion for data driven marketing and customer behaviour understanding.


This role requires the development of long-term relationships across senior client stakeholders in multiple businesses and across a wide array of industries, whilst also influencing internal Nectar360 teams and colleagues in Sainsbury’s and Argos.


You will play a key role in delivering Nectar360’s digital aspirations and our ambitious growth plans – growing our profits by 60% over the next 5 years.


Reporting into the Director of Planning, the role leads a direct team of 2.


What you need to do


Strategic leadership:

  • Lead and develop transformative data-driven planning and monetisation strategy across Sainsbury’s, Argos and Nectar Partners, to help deliver against our Nectar360 ambition and commercial aspirations

  • Demonstrate a strategic mind-set by understanding the key business challenges of our Clients and Partners. Work with the cross functional team (Analytics, Data & Insights, Clients Services and Campaign Media Management) to develop solutions

  • Identify supplier opportunity within the Argos corporate customer plan and work in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to introduce new/enhance media capability that deemed industry leading by clients

  • Be the most senior planning representative within Nectar360 that engages and influences Nectar Partners, their leadership team and other senior stakeholders to gain business support for joint media activation and evaluation plans

  • Play an active role in strategy and development of the planning team and broader Nectar360 business


Data Planning:

  • Responsible for your teams' insights led proposals for clients and partners, ensuring that strategy, data selection and process adhere to Sainsbury’s and Nectar’s data guidelines

  • Accountable for your team working with analytical resource to deliver evaluations, that create a story to demonstrate the effectiveness of 1st party data usage

  • Train and upskill Nectar360 Argos colleagues on how to do simple data led media planning. Educate the wider business on the application and benefits of this data led media capability, providing knowledge and training as applicable


Relationship Management:

  • Build a strong and collaborative way of working with peers across Nectar360 leadership and the wider Sainsbury’s leadership teams (trading, planning, digital, business ops etc.), to positively develop the culture of both the Planning team and the broader business

  • Foster working relationship with senior level external contacts to embed Nectar360 as a leader within loyalty marketing

  • Use these strong relationships and your highly specialised knowledge of Planning to influence and inspire commitment and investment from your clients into Sainsbury’s group media channels


Team Leadership:

  • Prioritise business requests and lead a team of 2 to deliver upon your planning strategy (aligned to corporate strategy and Nectar360 goals)

  • Lead the team in a fair and ethical way, and with integrity. This includes performance management, coaching, and clear goal setting

  • Lead, develop and maintain a challenging, motivating, and supportive team environment, in which all colleagues can achieve their responsibilities and play to their strengths

  • Ability to matrix manage across team functions within Nectar360 and across the wider Sainsbury’s business, to deliver on client objectives and revenue targets

  • Oversee and govern the workload/project management of your teams' deliverables to ensure that the priorities of the business are achieved

  • Brand Ambassador for Nectar360 - excellent communication skills at all levels, with the ability to articulate the benefits and USP of all Nectar360 services at senior levels and in broader forums including speaking at industry events and across the Sainsbury’s business


What you need to know

  • A clear expert in customer data and digital driven marketing and insights

  • Strong analytical/insight skills working with big data and complex challenges balancing client and business benefits

  • Extensive knowledge of how segmentation and profiling techniques are used for direct marketing and loyalty campaigns

  • Experienced in bringing data strategies to life in a compelling way

  • Demonstrable experience in successfully leading, motivating and managing a team

  • Significant experience of dealing comfortably with senior executives up to board level

  • Experienced at leading projects and confident in engaging wider business functions in addition to agency teams, FMCG clients and third-party suppliers

  • Advanced user of PowerPoint, Excel

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in order to respond to briefs and QC teams work effectively

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships at all levels

  • Exceptional communication skills with clarity of expression and engaging, as well as flexible style

  • Experience working in a fast moving and pressured environment

  • Extensive experience and a deep understanding of retail and the value that can be driven from data driven marketing

  • Strategic thinking and commercial acumen to support delivery of our commercial plan
