The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a unique attraction in south east London where world cultures and the natural world are brought together for everyone to enjoy. The Museum holds internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as a popular natural history gallery and Aquarium. The 16 acres of beautiful Gardens feature a tropical Butterfly House and offer stunning views across London.
We are looking for experienced cleaners who will take pride in helping us deliver a high standard of service for our visitors. Working within the Estate department you will be responsible for ensuring we provide the best experience possible in a welcoming, safe, secure, clean and comfortable environment.
You will have practical experience of polishing glass showcases, cleaning toilets, offices and gallery floors, preferably within a large public building. Please note that it is a requirement of the role to work on Bank Holidays weekends, excluding Christmas and Boxing Day.

Main purpose of the job
Ensure that all areas of cleaning responsibility are constantly maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene across the estate of the Horniman Museum & Gardens.
Section description
The Estates section is responsible for the following:
- Security of the entire site and all its buildings
- Cleaning and maintenance of all the buildings, amenities and contents
- Structural fabric of all the buildings from the roofs to the foundations
- Contents of all the buildings, furniture fixtures and fittings
- All the buildings services, electric, gas, water, pest control, lifts, two way radios, vehicles, waste, recycling, drainage and boilers
Main responsibilities
- Work as part of the Cleaning Support Team to provide a consistently high standard of cleaning.
- Ensure all areas of the museum buildings are cleaned to an agreed standard following museum guidelines.
- Operate cleaning equipment and use cleaning materials as trained and directed.
- Ensure Health and Safety procedures are followed to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.
- Undertake such training and attendance on courses and seminars which will assist in the development of skills which are relevant to the department including manual handling, pest identification and safeguarding training.
- Attend regular team meetings.
Cleaning tasks
- Sanitizing cleans across site throughout the day, with focus on high touch areas.
This will include tasks such as cleaning door handles, stair rails, light switches, communal desks, kitchen worktops
- Follow agreed task sheets for each area and type of cleaning. Some example tasks in areas include:
- Toilets - daily clean floors, walls, doors, sanitary ware, mirrors, handles and surfaces; replenish hygiene materials as required; monitor condition of sanitary bins
- Gallery areas - vacuum, sweep, and/or wash floors; clean glass doors; attend to brassware; clean glass in cases and cabinets as needed
- Public areas - sweep and/or wash floors, wipe over signage; lift and clean all mats
- Private areas – sanitize through kitchens, sanitize through bathrooms, sweep/mop floors, dust ledges and skirting
- Across site – empty bins, remove cobwebs, remove chewing gum
- Deep cleaning across the estates as required
- Provide emergency response to toilets and other areas as required
- Be available to support events, ensuring areas are cleaned prior to start times.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the line manager.
Tasks at SCC (Study Collections Centre) to include
- Sweeping up and removing leaves
- Removing weeds across site
- Cutting back plants
- Removing moss
General responsibilities
- Act in a professional manner and uphold the Horniman’s Code of Conduct
- Follow and promote safe systems of work and observe health and safety regulations
- Undertake any other duties as may be required from time to time.
- Provide support for out of hours’ activities such as functions, private views and other events as required.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Minimum Shortlisting Criteria
Knowledge and experience
- Experience of cleaning all types of surfaces in public and private areas. (E)
- Knowledge of application of health and safety guidelines including manual handling, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), use of Personal protective equipment (PPE) and electrical safety. (E)
Additional Shortlisting Criteria
- Experience of cleaning in a museum or similar large building. (E)

- To carry out light manual handling tasks, including the movement of chairs, tables and equipment (E)
