The Early Help and Prevention Service Children’s Centres and Family Support Service, operate city-wide to provide and deliver high quality childhood and family support services to improve children and young people’s emotional and physical development, to address issues to prevent escalation and the need for statutory service involvement.

Working with children and young people who are considered vulnerable, you’ll play a key role in improving the lives of families and children in Leicester, to secure improvement in children’s outcomes for learning and development.


As a valued member of the team, you’ll work with other agencies to ensure families receive the support and resources required to achieve their full potential. Using a ‘team around the family’ approach, you’ll provide evidence-based integrated preventative services for our most vulnerable and referred children, young people, and their families. Using your expertise, you’ll share your skills and knowledge, modelling good practice in play and learning for parents, volunteers, and students.


Working across a designated locality area, you’ll be willing and able to travel anywhere in the city to visit people in their homes and other settings in the city such as nursery or school.


There is a full time post working 37 hours per week and a part time post working 18.5 hours per week on a 12 month fixed term contract. For internal staff, 12 secondments are available however, please make your manager aware before applying.

What you’ll be doing

As a Child Development Worker, you’ll work with children predominantly up to the age of 8 who need support to improve their overall development in terms of learning, health, and wellbeing. You’ll be assigned a caseload, where you’ll lead on assessments as well as monitor and record the impact of the interventions. You’ll provide focussed learning sessions through play-based activities and identify appropriate tools for children which supports their language and communication, personal, social, emotional, and physical development. You’ll bring about change to improve family functioning, children being ready to learn, promote positive mental health and emotional well-being in young children. You’ll work alongside education and specialist child professionals, enlisting their support and sharing best practice, to achieve improved outcomes. You’ll work with statutory, voluntary agencies and community organisations to support review meetings and case conferences.

What you’ll need

A highly motivated Individual, with experience of delivering group-based care to young children aged 0-8 and providing whole family work with young children and their parents/carers. You’ll have a minimum of NVQ Level 3 in childcare or equivalent and a good understanding of how poverty and disadvantage can impact on children’s learning and outcomes. You’ll need experience of planning and delivering learning programmes as part of the early years curriculum that extend children’s learning and development. Using excellent communication skills, you’ll provide sound advice and guidance to parents/carers regarding their child’s health and learning, as well as work effectively with key stakeholders as part of a multi-agency approach. Furthermore, you’ll need to be proficient in using IT packages/systems, have great attention to detail and ensure case records are up-to-date and accurate.

This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
