Job description
Directorate: Corporate Resources
Hours: 37 hours a week (Reduced hours considered)
Contract Type: Permanent
Location: The Council House
We are a dynamic and expanding legal child care team, based in the City Centre. We are looking for a highly motivated and suitably qualified lawyer for this important post but we would consider applications from people who are approaching qualification if they were the right person for the role. As a member of our busy legal team, your main area of work will be advising and representing the Children and Young People’s Department in all aspects of child care law including care and adoption proceedings. You will be expected to undertake or be prepared to work towards undertaking your own advocacy in the local courts and demonstrate a strong technical knowledge when handling public law cases. You may also advise on judicial review applications that relate to the provision of children’s services. If you're interested in the role but don't have the requisite experience, we can offer inhouse training and mentoring. You will work closely with other solicitors and legal colleagues who are very experienced in this area and you will be supported by legal officers (paralegals) and senior managers.
In addition, we offer:
- competitive, equal pay with annual increments and increases
- the opportunity to carry a varied and stimulating caseload
- access to the Local Government pension scheme
- work life balance (flexible working and the option of working from home for part of the week)
- 27 days annual leave plus public holidays, rising to 32 days (plus public holidays) after 5 years’ service
- eligibility to apply to purchase up to ten days additional annual leave.
- funding may be considered for professional development that would complement your career aspirations
Our full-time working week is 37 hours per week but we would also welcome applications from those who might prefer to work reduced hours
You will need to be:
- a qualified solicitor/barrister/chartered legal executive (Fellow of CILEx) or approaching qualification
- able to demonstrate confidence and experience of advocacy in a variety of settings but ideally with particular emphasis on representing parties within public law proceedings in the court arena.
- enthusiastic as well as being a good communicator
- able to work under pressure and on your own initiative
- be able to give clear pragmatic advice
