Job description
The CFX Supervisor will manage CFX Leads, artists & project pipeline on 3D projects for TV, film & games clients. Using the studio's Houdini CFX pipeline the CFX Supervisor will be driving the team to meet scheduled objectives & quality targets set across a variety of Cloth, Hair, Fur, Feathers and Muscle set-ups & simulations. The CFX Supervisor is responsible for all output from the project CFX team.
In addition, they are required to feedback on & manage technical challenges alongside other project leads and CFX Technical Directors. A fundamental responsibility of this role is interpreting, filtering & communicating a diverse range of feedback to the CFX artists. The CFX Supervisor will help the Head of Dept in mentoring Jnr members of the Dept providing technical & artistic leadership, passing on knowledge & methodology on best practice & technique, helping the growth of the studio.
The CFX Supervisor will be expected to engage in basic line management tasks alongside the Head of Rigging & CFX, helping manage the performance and wellbeing of the artists, as well as inputting on recruitment decisions when necessary.
The CFX Supervisor should represent the department for all cross-site pipeline communication and tool development, while ensuring any pipeline issues and solutions are presented to the Head of Rigging & CFX and filtered down to the studio team. They should look to provide guidance, support and solutions for any immediate departmental production issues across the studio, communicating to the Head of Rigging & CFX the effects on any long term project planning.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work closely with the Art Director, CG Supervisor, and Departments Leads to take the most efficient creative decisions that guarantee the best output.
- Prototype and implement new solutions, following the standard of our pipeline and contributing to its maintenance. Document and present these solutions to the CFX team.
- Work closely with the RnD Department to identify processes/improvements/tools to increase department productivity.
- Work with the Head of Rigging & CFX and CFX Leads to implement departmental solutions suitable to be adopted across multiple projects, assets, and platforms.
- Work with the Head of Rigging & CFX and Recruitment to identify suitable artists for the department and assist in any required interviews.
- Mentoring and coaching new and existing members of the team on an individual and collective basis. Including informal 1-2-1 with team members to provide guidance and support where required.
- Maintain communication with Head of Rigging & CFX outlining any production, personal or pipeline issues within the studio location.
- Provide verbal/written briefs to project cfx artists prior to the start of any task, outlining any possible challenges, creative intentions and task deadlines.
- Direct the assignment and breakdown of the project tasks, making sure that the tasks are assigned based on ability and any interdepartmental dependencies.
- Actively monitor and re-scope the project content being created, flagging to Production any changes that have occurred and the likely impact that might result.
- Help Production to communicate with the client any project issues and potential solutions.
- Maintain awareness of the budget and schedule impact of technical and creative solutions being proposed.
- Set up and run Cloth, Hair, Fur, Feathers and Muscles simulations using Houdini.
- Work alongside the Modelling, Animation and LRC departments to ensure that models are suitable for simulation and any created simulation rigs are functional and conform to a given standard in relation to the pipeline for a given project.
REQUIREMENTS
- Proven production experience acting in a Supervisory role.
- A strong, measurable track record in delivering against layout department goals and targets.

- Solid experience with Cloth, Hair, Fur, Feathers and Muscles simulation in Houdini and/or Maya.
