Hours: 37.5 hours per week on a rota basis

Main Purpose of the Job:

· To support the Centre Manager to promote the mission, vision and values of the organisation, working with the organisations Core Principles. Ensuring quality standards, so that all dogs are cared for as outlined in our Dog Welfare policies. In addition, support the Centre staff and volunteers to maximise their skills for the benefit of the dogs in our care.

· To support the East Yorkshire Community Manager in delivering services pertaining to training and advice.

· To identify problem behaviours, whilst also assessing risk and welfare in relation to dogs, and lead the work with these dogs to change their behaviour, with an aim to secure them the best chance of a successful transition to a home.

· Taking the lead in setting training and behaviour plans, working with the management team to ensure they are delivered.

· To support dogs, where it is necessary to receive veterinary support when related to behaviour.

· To take responsibility for those dogs in Special Measures or referral who require significant support and behaviour modification and in addition, when necessary and appropriate, make welfare and risk led recommendations.

· To support all staff and volunteers to further develop skills in dog behaviour and training. Sharing knowledge and supporting prospective adopters or members of the public.

· Work as part of the Centre Trainer peer group, supporting all Jerry Green Centres, to share best practice and knowledge. In addition, support project work where required.

East Yorkshire Key Tasks and responsibilities

· To support the East Yorkshire community objectives; where required to give advice and training to dogs under the remit of the Community Manager, whether this be to avoid a dog coming into our care, returning to us or promote better welfare for the dogs that need our help. This activity may be carried out either, virtually on the telephone, in the community or at a pre-designated place/space. (such as other centres, parks, dog paddocks and so on)

· To provide administration support to the EYC Manager such as written material, advice sheets, training notes.

· To support workshops and specific training sessions, held to support dog training and welfare.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

· Work with the Management Team to support and advise on the suitability of dogs for behaviour modification, develop and deliver Jerry Green Dog Rescue behaviour plans.

· If required, care for all dogs at the centre in an appropriate and welfare friendly manner, to include preparation of kennels, grooming, feeding, exercise and administration of medication as required.

· Ensure the highest standards of customer care are delivered to all centre visitors and contacts by presenting a professional and friendly approach both face to face, on the telephone and other communication methods including social media.

· Provide centre staff and volunteers with on-going training in areas such as dog behaviour, training and welfare, to support and develop them in their roles.

· Help develop Dog Welfare Assistant’s knowledge in order to positively promote dogs through Meet&Match® appropriate to their circumstances by providing accurate and relevant information and advice. To deliver Meet&Match® visits for dogs that require additional training support.

· Support fosterers and adopters prior to and post adoption through various forms of communication, dependent on individual needs.

· Facilitating good team working with staff, volunteers, and other centres including contributing to training programmes, presentations and other resources, connecting and liaising with other organisations to share learning and best practice.

· Engagement and participation in talks, writing website and newsletter articles, including implementing the social media policy to positively promote our work with dogs on social media platforms and via our website.

· Contributions to communications with examples of case studies, new developments, successes to share.

· Maintain accurate and up to date records on the dog management database to include admission, adoption, and behaviour, financial and veterinary information as well ensuring that customer information is shared with Central Office in line with current UK legislation.

· Responsible, in conjunction with their line manager, for ensuring their work area is fit for purpose and free from hazards, in line with the Clear Desk Policy.

· Be active in raising the profile of JGDR taking a proactive approach with fundraising, publicity and education events and activities.

Person Specification Core Competencies

Qualifications & experience - Essential

· Degree qualified or extensive experience in rescue with significant, relevant CPD.

· Qualified to National Diploma, NVQ2 or equivalent in animal care/welfare.

· Paid or voluntary experience of working in a dog rescue environment or equivalent.

· Willing to work beyond contracted hours to meet the welfare needs of the dogs where necessary.

· Experience of undertaking administrative activities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - Essential

Understanding of the importance of ensuring good dog welfare:

· Ability to actively contribute to the dog welfare policy, standards and procedures.

· Ability to manage and complete projects and in addition manage multiple tasks.

· Experience of working with dogs to modify or change behaviour.

· Ability to develop and deliver skills development in colleagues.

· Passionate about continuous improvement of the welfare of dogs across the whole organisation, actively participate in the Centre Trainer forum to develop good practice.

· Expertise gained through training or experience with evidence of making a positive contribution to dog welfare.

· Can demonstrate knowledge and experience at ensuring facilities are safe and fit for purpose for visitors, staff and dogs alike.

· Evidence of accurate record keeping, particularly post adoption contacts and support, referrals, and euthanasia.

· Evidence of working with a pragmatic and realistic approach to achieve the optimum results.

· Be aware of the limitations of their expertise and ensure cases that require specialist or veterinary advice are highlighted to the Centre Manager.

Administration & Operations - Essential

· Understands the importance of, and have the ability to ensure accuracy of dog records at all time. This relates to but is not limited to post adoption contact and support, referrals, euthanasia’s, and foster insurances; keeps quality records of contact with vets and outside organisations.

· Supports Fundraising and Communications in all areas of work.

· Evidence of having worked in a strict health and safety environment, which is relevant to maintaining the wellbeing of staff and members of the public around dogs and site facilities.

· Evidence of having maintained animal welfare and training equipment and facilities.

· Is aware of and can demonstrate record keeping in-line with current UK legislation

Customer Care:

· Experience of assessing and understanding needs of the public who visit rescue organisations.

· Experience of matching dogs to potential adopters (Meet & Match®)

· Provide examples of excellent customer care and building of good relationships with customers.

· Experience of post adoption support.

· Public speaking experience.

· Experience writing and delivering training materials (including but not limited to: behaviour reports, articles for website and newsletter etc.)

· Able to facilitate good team working with staff, volunteers, and other Centres, connecting and liaising with other organisations.

· Able to communicate effectively in verbal, written and electronic media.

· Demonstrate confidence in the use of IT packages including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and willing to learn other commercial and bespoke packages within the organisation.

· Ability to work flexibly across the Organisation to meet the needs of the Charity potentially including evening work on occasion.

· Be willing to travel to areas within the UK with possible overnight stays both on and off JGDR sites.
