THE ROLE

To catalogue, research and co-ordinate European Sculpture sales, and assist in general day-to-day functioning of the department

RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Cataloguing and researching items for Sculpture and Works of Art sales
  • Assisting the senior members of the department with the research and cataloguing of objects to the highest standard according to scheduled deadlines
  • Corresponding with external experts
  • Involvement in all aspects of catalogue production
  • Ensuring that all photography for catalogues is completed in a timely manner.
  • Assisting with paste-ups and layouts
  • Liaising with Catalogue Production and other support department.
  • Dealing with day-to-day client enquiries at the counter, by email and on the telephone
  • Management of a running list of consignors and property for all sale property in Excel
  • Writing condition reports and responding to photo forms, estimate enquiries and general correspondence
  • Helping to maintain departmental archives
  • Organizing, together with department administrator, the location and movement of property within the department
  • Operating at all times in accordance with the company's rules on compliance and corporate governance
  • Assisting with valuations.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • Education to degree level in History of Art, ideally with proven knowledge and experience of Sculpture and Works of Art
  • First class research skills
  • The ability to work effectively individually and in a team and to 'pitch in' when required
  • Ability to work well under pressure, and a flexible approach to a wide range of tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a commitment to an exemplary level of client service
  • Self-motivated with enthusiasm to learn
  • Good organizational skills with proven ability of meeting deadlines
  • Some understanding of Sotheby's and its culture and services, and of the auction process in general
