Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated and experienced Carnivore Keeper to join our Animal Care team at Peak Wildlife Park in the Staffordshire Peak District. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for animal welfare, conservation and education, and possess the necessary skills to care for and maintain the health and wellbeing of our carnivorous species.

Responsibilities:

  • Daily care and husbandry of carnivorous animals, including but not limited to feeding, cleaning, and administering medications as required.
  • Observing and monitoring animal behaviour, health, and welfare, reporting any concerns to the relevant team members.
  • Developing and implementing behavioural enrichment programs to enhance the wellbeing of the animals in your care.
  • Assisting in the planning and execution of captive breeding programs, adhering to international and national guidelines.
  • Maintaining detailed records of animal care, health, diet, and behaviour, ensuring accuracy and compliance with zoo policies.
  • Conducting routine enclosure maintenance and ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene are maintained.
  • Providing support and guidance to volunteers and interns, ensuring they adhere to safety protocols and procedures.
  • Participating in public education programs and delivering engaging presentations to zoo visitors about the animals in your care.
  • Collaborating with other zoo departments and external organisations on conservation projects, research initiatives, and educational programs.
  • Adhering to and promoting the zoo's health and safety policies, risk assessments, and standard operating procedures.
  • Participating in emergency response drills and training sessions, as required.
  • Remaining up-to-date with relevant legislation, best practices, and advancements in animal care and husbandry within the field.
  • Performing any other relevant duties as assigned by the Head Keeper or other senior management.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in caring for carnivorous animals within a zoological, wildlife or similar setting.
  • A recognised qualification in animal care, zoology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of animal behaviour, welfare, and husbandry practices specific to carnivorous species.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Confidence in public speaking and the ability to engage and educate visitors of all ages.
  • A high level of physical fitness and the ability to perform manual tasks, including lifting, bending, and carrying.
  • A valid UK driving licence is desirable.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings, as required by the zoo's schedule.
  • A strong commitment to animal welfare, conservation, and environmental sustainability.
  • First aid certification or willingness to obtain it upon hiring.
  • Familiarity with the Zoo Licensing Act 1981 and other relevant UK legislation and guidelines.
