Arlington County's Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking an experienced Clinic Aide to provide professional nursing services for the Client Services Entry (CSE) Bureau of the Behavioral Healthcare Division (BHD). This position is responsible for the therapeutic care and monitoring of clients and assisting them with symptom reduction and return to the community or hospitalization if a higher level of care is required. The Clinic Aide may assist with bed findings and pre-and post-hearings for clients needing psychiatric hospitalization. In addition, may help clients with activities of daily living and ensure a safe and clean environment before the next shift. This position will be a critical partner of the Emergency Services team, assisting clients in psychiatric distress.
This person will be supervised by and report to a clinical program supervisor during daytime hours and responsive to the Supervisor on Call and the Emergency Services Assistant Supervisor on shift since services are provided 24/7, 365 days per year.
CSE provides psychiatric services, including health and wellness assessments, education, and targeted intervention to seriously mentally ill clients in the CIC. These individuals are an essential part of an interdisciplinary crisis team that provides care for clients in psychiatric distress in Arlington County's Crisis Intervention Center (CIC).
Specific duties include:
Providing care to clients to promote safety, comfort, and therapeutic environment while monitoring patients' behaviors and addressing concerns;- Collaborating with police, sheriff's deputies, hospital staff and family members engaged in the client's care, security, and Arlington County staff in Emergency Services;
- Working with other multi-disciplinary team members in milieu activities;
- Performing initial client evaluations to determine treatment priorities; taking vital signs, weight, and performing miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned;
- Serving as the liaison to patients, families of patients, or external facilities and agencies;
- Providing mobile response in various locations to address behavioral health crises with clinicians, peer recovery specialists, and public safety officers;
- Assisting with admitting and discharging clients;
- Providing all necessary documentation through record review; obtaining required medical clearance information and faxing clinical paperwork to facilities while maintaining confidentiality;
- Helping clients in their activities of daily living, serving meals, helping clients eat as needed, and leading clients in therapeutic activities;
- Verbally de-escalating agitated clients to ensure the application of the least restrictive levels of intervention;
- Assisting nursing staff with monitoring and tracking health assessment data, referrals, and coordinating medical and psychiatric care;
- Assisting with providing outreach to high-risk clients in the psychiatric services program; and
- Facilitating linkages with other service providers to appropriate resources to promote client well-being.

Minimum: Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard high school or obtaining a GED certificate, or the equivalent plus some experience in providing direct human services in a clinic, nursing home, psychiatric facility or other area related to assignment.
Licenses/Certifications: Requirements may include any combination of the following, depending on the assignment:
- CPR Certification or the ability to obtain certification within a prescribed period
- First Aid Training and Certification or the ability to obtain certification within a prescribed period
- Successful completion of state WIC-TEC Training in select Modules (currently, 1 –3, 6-8, 11-13) within a prescribed period
Substitution: College coursework in a human services-related field may be a substitute for related work experience on a year for year basis.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
- Providing services to individuals experiencing a behavioral health emergency;
- Working with clients with co-occurring substance use disorders;
- Experience implementing crisis intervention and verbal de-escalation strategies with clients in psychiatric distress;
- Experience working with SED and SMI population and community systems of care;
- Experience communicating and interacting with mental health professionals in a team environment; and
- Experience making administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.
A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence, or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Employment restrictions: To ensure that dual relationships are avoided and that employees who are also clients do not relate to their service provider as co-professionals, employees will not be hired by the County to provide or support services to the team or program in which they are current clients:
You cannot concurrently receive behavioral health services from Arlington County Community Service Board (CSB) programs while employed in an Arlington County CSB program (exception Crisis Intervention services).- At least 24 months must have passed between receipt of CSB services from Arlington County and employment in an Arlington County CSB program.
Monday - Friday - (7:00 am – 3:00 pm, 3:00 pm –11:00 pm, and 11:00 pm to 7:00 am.
- Emergency services are considered "essential" and may be required to work beyond scheduled hours as needed.
