Classroom Support are excited to be working with an incredible SEN School (Pupils aged 3-19) in Colchester!

Classroom Support are currently searching for a promising Care Support Worker on behalf of a wonderful SEN (Special Educational Needs) School in Colchester. The school offers a “safe and inspiring environment” (Ofsted, 2019) and supports pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and severe learning difficulties (SLD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The school are looking to recruit experienced SEN Teaching Assistants and Care Support Workers. These roles are long term positions. They will begin with a probationary period and if this is passed there are long term contracts available with weekly shift work and potential permanent contract offers further down the line, starting on an agency worker basis.

The ideal candidate will be a hardworking Care Support Worker with experience supporting students who have special education needs (SEN). Ideal candidates will have experience supporting such students in 1:1 and group settings and have first-hand experience working with children with SEN such as ASD, PMLD or SLD.

The ideal person will also need to be flexible as you will be working across the Primary and Secondary departments, and residential for outside school shift hours. Shifts can range from dayshifts in the classroom to awake night shifts in the residential areas.

Your working days will be Monday – Friday, and the hours will vary due to the work being shift work. You will be required to work a minimum of 28 hours a week, but overtime can be available if you want to work additional hours. To start in March/April 2023.

It is essential that you have previous experience of working with children with Special Educational Needs, are confident in supporting children with ASD, Down Syndrome, Hearing Impairments, Visual Impairments and multi-sensory impairment and able to provide personal care. Ongoing training will be provided at the school as well as refresher training throughout the year.

Candidate Requirements

  • Must have experience of working within a school in the past 2 years.
  • Must have experience of supporting students with challenging behaviour, ASD, PMLD or SLD and be of a calm but firm nature.
  • Must have or be willing to pay for a DBS (Has to be run for children and adults, none recorded). You will need both or be willing to pay £60 towards the running of a DBS that covers both children and adults if you do not already have one and on the update service (£13 per year).
  • Advantageous to have previous experience in the care sector.
  • Advantageous to have previous teaching/tutoring/mentoring experience.
  • Advantageous to have personal experience working with close family/siblings with ASD or Moderate to Severe learning difficulties.
  • Any school or Nursery work experience relevant.
  • Behaviour management skills advantageous.
  • Any qualification in Health and Social care or Teaching and Learning in schools also advantageous.
  • Any experience in using BSL (British Sign Language) or advanced Makaton is advantageous.
  • Any direct experience in working with adults of children who are Hearing Impaired or Deaf required.
