Job description
· To assist in the care of all Service Users, subject to Company policies and agreed procedures and to participate in the provision of a high standard of care.
To participate in the Key Worker Programme.
· Attitudes/Etiquette
a) Behave in a responsible, polite manner at all times.
b) Respect the confidence of Service Users and be aware that all information pertaining to Service Users and their treatment should be treated in the strictest confidence.
c) Refer all enquires to the person in charge.
d) Be aware of own limitations, i.e. seek help as necessary.
e) Wear uniform correctly.
· Care – Functions:
a) To work with the caring team, provide assistance as directed by the Home Manager/person in charge with the following tasks:
b) Simple bed-making.
c) Serve meals, and prepare and serve beverages under the direction of the person in charge. Set tables and trays, assist Service Users who need help, prepare light meals, tidy and clear the Dining Room.
d) Assist those Service Users who need assistance as directed by the person in charge.
e) Weigh mobile Service Users.
f) Assist person in charge with bathing or showering of Service Users.
g) Assist in the care of Service Users with continence support needs.
h) Assist Service Users use the toilet.
i) Report to person in charge abnormalities observed in urine, faeces and sputum and save specimens for him/her to observe.
j) Give and remove bedpans and urinals.
k) Assist Service Users with dressing and undressing.
l) Assist with care of hair, oral care, pressure areas and nails as requested.
m) Provide washing facilities for Service Users after using toilet facilities and prior to meals.
n) Assist the person in charge to carry out last offices if required.
o) Assist the person in charge to admit and discharge Service Users with due regard to relevant procedures such as that relating to property and valuables etc.
p) On discharge of the Service Users, clean the bed and make ready for future use.
q) Escort Service Users as requested by the person in charge.
r) Maintain tidiness and cleanliness in all rooms, e.g. sluice, Service User’s rooms, communal areas, etc.
s) Be aware of hazards in working environment to Service Users and staff and follow procedures on the same e.g. fire, health and safety, etc.
t) Report any accidents to Service Users or staff to person in charge according to agreed procedure.
u) Report any breakages or equipment requiring repair to person in charge.
v) Observe and report to person in charge any changes in the condition or behaviour of the Service Users.
w) Report to person in charge any complaints from Service Users or relatives.
x) Answer call bells, the door and telephone and greet visitors in a polite, friendly and professional manner.
y) Help to care for the needs of the dying.
z) Assist in the promotion of the physical, educational and psychological wellbeing of all Service Users.
aa) Provide activity and stimulation of Service Users in accordance with the Activities Programme.
bb) Undertake such other duties as may be required.
N.B In Nursing Home settings in conjunction with the Home Manager or the person in charge and after appropriate training, identified Healthcare Assistants may undertake professional duties, e.g. taking and recording of temperature, pulse and blood pressure, testing urine and recording of results.
· Liaison and Communication
a) Attend staff meetings as requested.
