Campus Patrol Officer (5 posts)

We are looking for enthusiastic, positive and reliable individuals to join our Campus Patrol team to contribute to the delivery of our highly customer centric Security Operations service.

Joining one of four Security shifts, the successful candidate will work effectively as part of a team to ensure the safety and security of the University community (including students, staff, and visitors) by dealing with and reporting problems and liaising with / supporting emergency services as required. You will ensure the safety and security of University property including patrolling both on and off campus, checking security and safety of premises and contents and if necessary, detaining intruders (as required).

You will work 12 hour shifts, with a rotating shift pattern of two day shifts (07.00 – 19.00), followed by two night shifts (19.00 – 07.00), followed by four day’s rest. This will include weekends, University Closure Days, and Bank Holidays.

Salary: £23,700 - £24,533 per annum (Grade 3) with a 17.5% (of basic salary) shift allowance and contracted additional hours of 5 hours at single time and 2 hours at time and a half.

We have 5 full time, open ended roles available; 4 from 2 October 2023 and 1 from 1 November 2023.

Job Description

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To ensure the delivery of a highly customer centric service relating to safety and security of people, grounds, buildings and their contents.

MAIN DUTIES

Security
  • To ensure the safety and security of the University community by dealing with and reporting problems, providing for the security of staff, students and visitors, liaising with / supporting emergency services as required.
  • To ensure the safety and security of University property including patrolling both on and off site, checking security and safety of premises and contents, questioning and, if necessary, detaining intruders (as required) and reporting damage.
  • To operate fixed security points including barrier access, inspecting passes, identifying/registering visitors, checking bags and vehicles (where applicable).
  • To maintain effective communication with relevant parties via radio.
  • To monitor closed circuit television (CCTV) screens and alarm recording systems.
  • To monitor and facilitate appropriate car parking within current guidelines and according to the University’s Car Parking Scheme. To undertake traffic control as required.
  • To deal with and record incidents, including fire and intruder alarm activations, accurately, and report verbally and in writing to immediate available Line Manager as necessary.
  • To maintain good relations with customers living in University residences and local residents in the community.
  • To deal with student lock-outs following defined procedures.
  • To maintain discipline on residences sites and establish a security presence to serve the best interests of Residences Services and the University.
  • To liaise with the Residences and Residence Life Teams.
  • To be aware of, and deal with, instances of drugs and alcohol abuse and bring such cases to the attention of the Line Manager following standard procedures.
  • To carry out driving duties as required.
  • To report faults found within the University fabric and if appropriate take preventative maintenance action where instructed to prevent further damage or cost of repair.
  • To administer first aid as required.
General
  • To actively participate departmental Quality and Customer Care initiatives.
  • To participate in a number of specific requirement annual training events which are essential to carry out the role.
  • To be responsible for the identification of personal training needs, in conjunction with your Manager, where appropriate.
  • To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate
  • To adhere to relevant Health, Safety and Hygiene legislation / guidelines ensuring hazards are controlled accordingly.
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, EC directives and the University’s Safety, Health and Environment Policies and procedures and to cooperate with the University on any legal duties placed on it as the employer.
  • You may be asked to perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria
  • Proven ability to accurately communicate information which needs careful explanation or interpretation, both orally and in writing, to a wide and diverse range of people.
  • Proven ability to deal with customers face-to-face, over the telephone or via email promptly, effectively, sensitively and courteously providing the highest levels of customer service.
  • Proven ability to work unsupervised to deadlines as well as being able to work well as an effective team member, providing advice, guidance and feedback to other team members where necessary.
  • Proven ability to solve problems using initiative and creativity by identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems where there are a range of potential options available.
  • A suitable level of physical fitness.
  • A valid, full, Group B driving licence.
  • Evidence of IT skills including the use of Internet, Email, Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience of working in a security role / environment.
  • A current First Aid Certificate. If you do not hold one on appointment, you will be required to undertake training, arranged by the University, as soon as is reasonably practicable.
Desirable Criteria
  • Proven ability to speak / understand Welsh or willingness to learn.
