National and Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (N&S CAMHS) are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and skilled band 7 dietitian to join the Maudsley Centre for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders (MCCAED) ARFID team.
MCCAED is a Specialist Eating Disorders Service for young people aged up to 18 years and based at the Michael Rutter Centre at the Maudsley Hospital. The multi-disciplinary ARFID team within MCCAED consists of Clinical Psychologists, Nurses, Psychiatrist, Dietitians, Paediatrician and Assistant Psychologists, supported by a Team Administrator. The service provides formulation-based outpatient treatment specifically tailored to children and young people with ARFID, accepting local and national patients. The wider MCCAED service also includes an intensive day patient service for young people with restrictive eating disorders and an outpatient service predominantly seeing young people with Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.
MCCAED has a strong commitment to developing innovative treatment through systematic research, its work being well known both nationally and internationally. The team provides specialist training opportunities for a range of professionals of all mental health disciplines including trainees on the MSc in Family Therapy and Certificate Course in Family Therapy and Clinical Psychology trainees on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology run by the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.
The post-holder will provide a specialist dietetic input to the ARFID service for children and young people aged 2-17 years with ARFID. This includes specialist dietetic assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes. The post holder will also contribute to student training, supervision of more junior staff, meal support and service development.
Key responsibilities:
- Dietary assessment and treatment of young people with ARFID, together with members of the multi-disciplinary ARFID team
- Providing evidence based nutritional recommendations to families, young people and other members of the team
- Liaising with other services and professionals to implement nutritional recommendations for eating disorder recovery
MCCAED staff are currently working primarily face to face with a small number of virtual consultations when appropriate. Our physical base is at the Michael Rutter Centre, Maudsley Hospital. This is on the same site as the trust headquarters.
Our Trust headquarters is located at Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station (zone 2). The Trust also provides services and operate across other locations, such as London boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; and substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Lambeth, Greenwich and Wandsworth.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Specialist Responsibilities to the Team:
To work as an autonomous dietetic practitioner within the multi-disciplinary team using highly developed assessment and clinical reasoning skills to plan and provide responsive and effective dietetic assessment and treatment for children and young people referred to the ARFID team, MCCAED. This will include:
1. a) Managing and prioritising the caseload. b) Assessing patients by interviewing the patient, and family and carers if appropriate; using clinical information available from other sources, making and using anthropometric and other clinical measurements, and requesting and interpreting additional clinical tests as appropriate. c) Collaborating closely with colleagues to manage medical risk, which may be severe. d) On the basis of the assessment information, and the evidence base, working in close collaboration with colleagues, the patient and their family to produce care plans for dietetic treatment. e) Supporting the implementation of nutritional recovery by providing treatment personally, to individuals or groups, and by close collaboration with members of the ARFID team to ensure that management and reduction of nutritional risk are given a high priority in the overall care package. f) Working with carers and family members of patients to support the patient’s progress towards recovery. g) Providing effective education, information and support to patients learning to take responsibility for their nutritional health in the context of ambivalence and extreme anxiety. This may be in-group or individual contact and will include families and carers. h) Contributing to discharge planning as appropriate. i) Developing, producing, using and evaluating supporting materials for patients, carers, and for other staff, using appropriate language so that they are within the literacy skills of the client group, and promote a motivational approach. j) Maintaining a high level of awareness of safety in patient areas where there may be incidents that are difficult or challenging and undertaking mandatory training to ensure personal ability to maintain safety. k) Collaborating closely with colleagues to provide a high level of support and close supervision to patients who may be extremely anxious, while they are eating. l) Attending team meetings to discuss and plan individual patients’ progress.
2. Clinical Individual Responsibilities:
3. a) Assume responsibility for nutritional assessment and determining nutritional risk. Provide specialist assessment and advice, working closely with the MDT to develop appropriate dietetic care plans. b) Provide good quality group work both to teach the young people new skills and to support families. The post holder will need to be flexible in the timing of patient sessions. c) Be aware and understand evidence-based models of psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions including parent-training, CBT for children and adolescents and other relevant approaches. d) Assess safeguarding issues for each case discussing any concerns with other team members as appropriate taking responsibility to escalate and share information as required and set out in the safeguarding guidelines and refer concerns to Child Protection teams/ safeguarding boards where necessary. e) Maintain good relationships and clear lines of communication with other professional agencies and departments, providing specialist advice and support where appropriate.

2. a) It is expected that all team members will engage in research and/or audit/ service evaluation / Quality Improvement projects. b) Participate in the monitoring, evaluation and audit of the service. c) Participate in, and support, larger research projects being undertaken in the Directorates by senior researchers/colleagues when appropriate. Contribute to the development of outcome data by accurately recording and ensuring that others accurately record pre and post treatment measures. d) Join colleagues in specialist teaching, consultation and support to other professionals and agencies, particularly in relation to Feeding and Eating Disorders, risk assessment, and self-harm. e) Undertake all duties in line with the applicable Code of Professional Conduct, policies and guidelines. f) Work in accordance and within the principles/guidelines of all aspects of clinical governance. g) Make effective use of colleagues in sharing and participating in casework supervision and be able to seek clinical supervision when required. To participate in the planning of regular professional supervision in line with professional requirements and clinical governance polices. h) Remain up to date with changing practices and wherever possible make full use of all training and educational facilities. Identify development and training needs with professional supervisor and clinical manager in accordance with Trust/Directorate polices. i) Maintain and ensure good professional standards and attitudes towards the care and treatment of clients. Maintain good relationships and clear lines of communication with other professionals, agencies and departments, providing specialist advice and support where appropriate.
