Can you handle it?

As a GMP Call Handler you will be the first point of contact offering immediate emergency telephone support to the diverse communities of Greater Manchester.

Our offer

The contact management team at Greater Manchester Police respond to 2 million calls for help annually. As a part of our team you will demonstrate compassion, resilience, respect, problem solving and teamwork.

You will be on the frontline, helping people and responding to some of the most difficult situations. This is a tough role but rewarding - your contribution will make a difference to the people and communities of Greater Manchester and will save lives.

You will be responsible for managing digital and telephone contact which will include emergency 999 calls. You will have the ability to remain calm, work well under pressure and identify and record vital details quickly and accurately. You will have excellent communications skills, the willingness to continually develop your skills and knowledge and a clear victim centred focus.

Please note, if appointed, the initial training course will be five weeks, Monday to Friday (0800-1600hrs) followed by mentoring on a 24/7 shift basis. No leave will be granted/accepted during the training period.

These posts are based at Force Headquarters, Northampton Rd, Manchester, M40 5BP and Claytonbrook Operational Communications Room, 2 Claytonbrook Road, Openshaw M11 1PP.

These posts attract 20% shift allowance and 14.46% weekend enhancement. The basic salary is £25,971 p/a and with added allowances it will equate to c. £33k p/a, however, please note that shift allowances and weekend enhancements are not payable during the initial training period.

What is the Residency Criteria?

To be eligible for appointment as a member of police staff, you must be a British citizen or a citizen of a country that is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. Commonwealth citizens and foreign nationals are also eligible but only if they are resident in the UK free of restrictions.
After 30 June 2021, nationals of the EEA or Switzerland will also need to provide evidence that their stay is free from restrictions.
In the context of EEA nationals, we are content that pre-settled status counts as free from restrictions.

Greater Manchester Police have been informed of potential personal tax implications for members of the 1987 Police Pension Scheme, who retire and take a pension between the ages of 50 and 54 inclusive and then take up employment as a Police Staff member. Members of the police pension scheme whose age is between 50 and 54 who are re-employed as a Police Staff member have to meet certain conditions to keep their PPA and to protect against personal tax liability charges on any payments paid before the age of 55. One of those conditions is that a break of at least 1 month is required where the re-employment is ‘materially different’. However, if the role is not deemed to be ‘materially different’ then a 6 month break is required.

Apprentices; you must be in the last 6 months of your apprenticeship to be eligible to apply for this role.
