Job Purpose:
The Business Services Manager (BSM) will lead on the development and implementation of all centralised systems, the management of departmental processes and lead and line manage a small, dedicated administrative team across UoG Commercial Ltd.
The post holder will report directly to the University of Glasgow’s Head of Catering & Events and work closely with them to set scope, define and deliver a range of operational projects and new initiatives, delivering organisational requirements in line with set objectives.
The BSM will lead the development, implementation and monitoring of UoG Commercial Ltd operational procedures, including but not limited to, Health & Safety, Customer Experience, Continuous Improvement, Project Management, Training and People.
As part of UoG Commercial’s Senior Team tasked with delivering the catering provision across the campus, the BSM will work positively to build relationships with key stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and engagement at all times.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
The post holder will receive strategic support, guidance and direction from the Head of Catering & Events to:
  • Deliver a seamless service by enabling effective working practices, underpinned by robust processes and effective use of technology.
  • Develop and lead operational projects and new initiatives aimed at delivering commercial success and profitability.
  • Confidently and competently develop effective centralised processing through the use of appropriate tools, technology and systems.
  • Lead and develop the UoG Commercial Ltd performance management, training and development processes.
  • Utilise effective leadership styles and coaching to get the best performance from the team.
  • Ensure positive conflict resolution and create opportunities for the development of positive relationship building within the department and wider team – fostering a ‘one team’ culture.
  • Lead the team to be fully competent and compliant with legislative and operating procedures across each function. This requires all documentation, certification, standards and procedures to be mapped out, clearly defined, accessible and monitored continuously. This will involve working across a variety of business functions such as, but not limited to: Health & Safety, Customer Experience, Continuous Improvement, Project Management, Training and People.
  • Lead meetings and represent UoG Commercial by liaising with key stakeholders in both internal and external environments.
  • Implement processes and best practice to ensure all UoG Commercial Ltd business is planned and effectively delivered on time and in line with agreed KPI’s.
  • Lead and drive commercial awareness, efficiency and productivity improvement in the team through championing a continuous improvement culture.
  • Inspire and nurture the team, empowering individuals to take responsibility for their development and personal impact.
  • Work collaboratively to create a solid working partnership with other Senior Mangers within UoG Commercial.
  • Lead, as directed by the Head of Catering & Events, the preparation of financial reports, management information, trend analysis, business cases and commercial performance data, including analysis, interpretation, and associated recommendations.
  • Contribute to policy setting and service improvement discussions by working with customers and other services as appropriate, to review and develop the overall service.
  • This full-time role has a working pattern of 37.5 hours per week however flexibility may be required (some weekend and public holiday working during peak periods) to support business needs. This will be achieved by mutual (and prior) agreement.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Degree in Business Management/related discipline, experience in a similar role or an ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post, having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through personal development and progression.
A2 Comprehensive knowledge of commercial business cycles as well as the fundamentals of effective business management, including a high level of competency and working knowledge of various systems, software and the best practices, to successfully deliver against operational requirements.

Experience
Essential:
E1 Proven experience of leading business change projects in a commercial environment with the ability to motivate, fostering engagement and delivering against set objectives.
E2 Proven experience in a commercial business service environment.
E3 Experience of dealing with a variety of key stakeholders both internally and externally.
E5 Experience of budget management and financial reporting.
Other:
The Business Services Manager will be accountable to the UoG Commercial Ltd Board of Directors and have a direct line management relationship with the Head of Catering & Events for the University of Glasgow.
Terms and Conditions
Salary from £38,500 - £45,000 per annum (based on skills and experience).
This position is full time (37.5 hours per week) and permanent/open-ended but flexibility may be required by mutual agreement, and there may be some weekend and public holiday working at peak periods.
