The UKRI Project Delivery & Improvement Team are looking to recruit Business Analyst Apprentices with the primary location for work being based at Polaris House in Swindon, Wiltshire

We will fund and support your studies over a 2-year period to achieve the full qualification.
In addition, we will be helping the successful candidate to develop a broader range of personal and professional skills. We know it’s important to consider future career prospects and there are plenty of opportunities to continue professional development after the initial apprenticeship within UKRI.
The Business Analyst will understand and analyse user and business needs. They will ensure outcomes are aligned with service vision and business strategy by contributing to the link between current and future business models and delivering to the business architecture.
They will challenge constructively and act as a critical friend to achieve solutions that are fit for purpose. They will facilitate collaboration and lead effective communication with all partners to support design, build and delivery to meet the user needs.
Responsibilities:
Whilst carrying out the apprenticeship, this opportunity will carry out the responsibilities of a Junior Business Analyst. These include:
- Requirements capturing – Employ a range of tools and techniques to capture business and user requirements against the clear objectives articulated for the project. Resolve need and value of performing the activity based on the context.
- Process modelling – If required employ a range of tools and techniques to map ‘As-Is’ and To-Be’ business processes.
- Gap Analysis – Evaluate requirements against the present state (where we are) & the target state (where we want to be) and find opportunities to develop successful business requirements needed to make the transition.
- Impact Analysis – Identify the potential consequences of a change and estimate what needs to be modified to accomplish that change. Focus on prioritising changes within the details of the overall project design with appropriate level of effort required depending on change.
- Partner management and engagement – Ensure that partners have been identified within the project and that their requirements form part of the benefits analysis.
- Facilitation – Assist with facilitation to identify needs.
- Assurance and Quality – Ensure business needs and solutions are delivered to recognised methodologies.
- Business Solution Design – Engage with policy and strategy to ensure business systems, workflows and processes contribute to target operating model.
- Delivery Products Tools and Documentation – Assist with application of methodologies; operating model; functional specification; user cases; user stories; defect analysis; forms and templates appropriate for organisational context.
Working pattern
The team has moved to hybrid working from home, attending the office regularly, and when required. Occasional travel to other locations in other parts of the country may be required.
There will be time allocated during work hours to complete studies and attend training. However, there is an expectation that some work may need to be completed outside of working hours.

During training, the successful candidates are encouraged to be self-motivated, organised, and able to follow policy whilst meeting deadlines. With great attention to detail, you’ll work diligently through the varied work assigned to you.
To be eligible to apply for this apprenticeship, you will need to meet the following:
- Must not have a BSc Business Management, MBA or BCS International Diploma or equivalent
- Must not be currently accessing government funding for an education course such university degree, masters, skills boot camps in any subject, that will continue after October 2023
Your CV and/or cover letter will need to demonstrate that you meet the following shortlisting criteria:
- Have a desire to develop within the Business Analysis Profession
- Excellent written communication skills, including a good solid understanding of MS Office packages (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.).
- Good presentational communication skills with customers
- Ability to work both on own initiative and as a member of a wider team
- Have a minimum of 5 GCSEs that are grade C and above (or grade 4-9), that include English and Maths, (or equivalent level 2 qualifications) by October 2023
- Must be qualified up to level 3 or equivalent such as A Levels and/or a BTEC by October 2023
Interview criteria:
Prior Business Analysis or Project Management experience is not required, we encourage applications from anyone who has a strong curiosity about a career in Business Analysis.
Interviews will be based on previous experience, transferrable skills, and the potential to meet the required dedication in both technical and behavioural skills as detailed below:
- Take ownership for learning and development under the apprenticeship
- Work towards establishing and developing productive relationships with both internal and external partners
- Be an active team member, supporting colleagues, attending profession events and championing directorate and profession across UKRI.
