Hours: Flexible day shifts 09:00 – 17:30 and 12:30 – 21:30 and Night shifts Monday-Sun 20:00 08:00
Pay: £18:10 per hour
West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust provides acute healthcare services to a core catchment population of approximately half a million people living in west Hertfordshire and the surrounding area. Overall, the population served by the trust is relatively affluent, but there are some areas of deprivation.
The trust also provides a range of more specialist services to a wider population, serving residents of North London, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and East Hertfordshire.
As an employer of almost 5,000 people the trust is one of the biggest employers in the area and sees nearly a million patients each year.
The department delivers a wide range of services which include inpatient and outpatient dispensing, aseptic preparation, pre-packing, clinical ward based services, surgical preoperative assessment clinic service, medication support services (medicines information, formulary management, medication safety, audit, clinical trials support and clinical governance)and education and training. The department has specialist clinical pharmacists in paediatrics and neonatology, antimicrobials, intensive care, oncology, gynaecology and obstetrics. Currently 4 are non-medical prescribers.

Responsibilities include:
- Process samples, deciding on suitability of samples selecting appropriate culture media, incubation conditions and time.
- Produce laboratory reports of own findings and those of junior staff under supervision.
- Be fully conversant with the use of laboratory equipment and ensure that day-to-day preventative maintenance is carried out according to laboratory and suppliers protocols.
- Provide an out of hours service including on call and weekend/Bank Holidays rota and shifts.
- Inform clinical staff on wards and GP’s concerning important results, alerting them to the need for further tests and providing information to allow accurate clinical assessment.
To be successful in applying for this role you will need:
- BSc. in Biomedical Sciences
- HCPC Registered
- Completed Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology or equivalent experience
- Specialist up to date knowledge of diagnostic microbiology
- Experience in a diagnostic Microbiology laboratory working in all sections, including: Virology/Serology, Mycobacteriology, General Bacteriology, Mycology and Parasitology
