  • The post holder will act as an experienced Registered Biomedical Scientist to contribute to providing a professional clinical laboratory service as an aid to effective diagnosis and treatment.
  • Able to perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Develop and improve your professional expertise and specialist skills.
  • Specialist Biomedical Scientists will be expected to supervise non-HCPC registered staff and deputise for section leaders when necessary.
  • To contribute to the provision of specialist clinical and scientific services to patients that may include research and audit samples.

You should be able to perform core scientific and interpretive work as expected of a registered Biomedical Scientist, safely handle, use and dispose of patient samples and hazardous materials, and be able to plan and prioritise your work load on a day to day basis.
  • To plan and prioritise the scientific workload of the section on a day-to-day basis.
  • To become proficient in designated areas of diagnostic work within the department and to provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.
To understand and follow the laboratory standard operational and health and safety policies and procedures and ensure that safe working practices are maintained according to standard operating procedures

The laboratory is equipped with Beckman Coulter AU680, AU480 and Access2 analysers Sherwood Chloride analyser, Bio Rad D10, Roche Cobas, Phadia 250, Sebia minicap and an HPLC section, and use the Clinisys Winpath LIMS. The laboratory is UKAS ISO15189 accredited and recognised for IBMS Registration and Specialist Portfolio training.

The laboratory and the hospital have an active educational programme, including CPD accredited lectures, which all staff are encouraged to attend.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Communication
  • To provide and receive complex information to inform work colleagues or external contacts, e.g. other departmental staff or visitors to the department. This may include providing advice, explanation of results and instruction.
  • To participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within and outside the department.
  • To attend the departmental Quality Assessment meetings and participate in the monitoring, assessment, and improvement of the quality of the laboratory’s performance.
  • To communicate any difficulties, problems, accidents or incidents affecting the delivery of the service or the department to a section leader/line manager promptly.
  • To ensure that the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures and Health & Safety policies are understood and carried out by all staff.
  • To communicate all Health and Safety issues with departmental staff and Pathology Health and Safety Co-ordinator as necessary.
  • To promptly report any incident which involves injury, or potential injury to hospital staff, visitors or contractors, or which could adversely affect patient welfare in any way to a line manager or the Laboratory Health and Safety Co-ordinator.
  • To ensure that all contact with patients, staff from other Hospital departments and visitors to the Department is courteous, helpful and professional.
Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect)

Scientific Duties and Responsibilities
  • To safely handle, use and dispose of patient blood, urine, faeces, other body tissue, having due regard for patient confidentiality.
  • To safely handle, use and dispose of hazardous and / or radioactive chemicals.
  • To plan and prioritise the scientific workload of the section on a day-to-day basis.
  • To become proficient in designated areas of diagnostic work within the department and to provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.
  • To understand and follow the laboratory standard operational and health and safety policies and procedures and ensure that safe working practices are maintained according to standard operating procedures.
  • To adapt to new methodology or working practices when required, due to changing circumstances.
  • To ensure that specimens and request forms are adequately labelled before being accepted into the laboratory and to resolve problems arising from incorrectly or inadequately labelled specimens and requests.
  • To perform internal quality control and external quality assessment procedures and to report problems to the relevant Senior Biomedical Scientist.
  • To participate fully in the Department’s quality assurance and audit programs and assist in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance records.
  • To assist with the review and updating of risk assessments for all aspects of the activity of the department.
  • To assist with the review and updating of current COSHH assessments and COSSH assessments on all new substances being introduced to the laboratory.
  • To assist and participate in the research activities of the department.
  • To maintain patient confidentiality
  • To maintain an awareness of current developments especially with regard to any special areas of responsibility within the department.
  • To improve basic and specialist scientific expertise which may be achieved via CPD within an appraisal programme and to maintain a portfolio of relevant professional development.
  • To maintain registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Analytical & Interpretive Responsibilities
  • To validate results where appropriate, using interpretive and judgmental skills and according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • To authorise reports when given the delegated responsibility.
  • To operate, maintain and calibrate highly complex analytical equipment in accordance with departmental and manufacturer’s policies and procedures and to make judgements on how to proceed in the event of a failure, diagnose faults and take appropriate action when necessary.
  • To resolve problems arising from routine work activities and refer unresolved problems to the relevant senior biomedical scientist.
Planning & Organisation
  • To work unsupervised in a section of the laboratory and organize own work tasks or activities, co-ordinate biomedical support workers, and take responsibility for work done and in process.

Policy & Service development
  • To ensure that all Trust and departmental policies and procedures are implemented within areas of responsibility.
  • To contribute to the production, review and updating of the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures and Policies, and to suggest possible improvements.
  • To participate in the development, assessment and introduction of new techniques, equipment, and working practices, including cross-disciplinary working between biochemistry and haematology.
Resource management
  • To assist in monitoring and maintaining stock levels within current work section.
  • To ensure the efficient use of resources.
People management
  • To cover for staff shortages as far as is reasonable, in order to maintain the service.
  • To assist in the planning and execution of work in collaboration with colleagues.
  • To be familiar with the Trust and department health and safety policies and ensure that they are followed to maintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.
  • To be familiar with all core trust policies such as sickness reporting, annual leave requesting, risk management, health and safety, etc.
  • To carry out the duties and responsibilities of the post having due regard to the Trust's Equal Opportunities Policy and Health and Race Strategy.

  • To be fully competent in the use of the laboratory’s records and archiving procedures.
  • To be competent is using Q-Pulse to access and acknowledge Laboratory Medicine and departmental documentation.
Research and development
  • To contribute to the provision of specialist clinical and scientific services to patients that may include research and audit samples.
Other duties
  • To abide by the Trust’s Core behaviours for staff and all other Trust policies, codes and practices including standing financial instructions, research governance, clinical governance, patient and public involvement, codes and practices, and health and safety.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested.
