Accountable to: Senior Biomedical Scientist
Salary: £30,000- £40,000 a year
Full-time 37.5 hours Monday to Friday 08:30 to 16:30 (may include Saturday half day shift once trained).
Job Summary:
The Microbiology department at Harley Street Pathology Services has an exciting opportunity within clinical microbiology services department. We have a permanent post within our (Specialist) Biomedical Scientists team.
We welcome applications from Biomedical Scientists with a speciality in the diagnosis of infectious diseases by the application of microbiological, serological, Molecular technology using microscopy, culture, Rapid identification techniques, chemiluminescence and nucleic acid detection methods.
Microbiology Bench experience for Plate reading is essential.
The laboratory is equipped with Cobas for serology and biochemistry, Sysmex for haematology and Panther as Molecular system. Diagnostic work includes examination of Urine, genital swabs, semen analysis. Specimen for molecular testing of CT/GC, HPV, HSV and serology, biochemistry is also required.
As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, your main role is to carry out routine and specialist examination of samples using various technologies and to report or present the results as appropriate. You will be expected to assist the section manager (Lead BMS) in the daily operation of the assigned section including the supervision of support staff. You will rotate through all sections of the service including serology, virology, molecular diagnostics and microbiology.
- As part of the team the post holder should have developed knowledge, experience in specialised diagnostic biochemistry and haematology techniques and must have Health Professions Council (HPC) State Registration. Registration enables the post-holder to work unsupervised.
- Perform highly complex analysis of routine and urgent clinical samples in accordance with laboratory procedures using specialist optical, manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory equipment.
- Participate in the laboratory rotation through appropriate areas of the department.
- Carry out maintenance and preparation of reagents and equipment, including stock control, as specified in Standard Operating Procedures.
- Measure and monitor the accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
- Undertake technical validation of results from laboratory investigations.
- Participate in stock control and management.
- Carry out corrective action when the quality control procedures indicate loss of performance.
- Plan and organise their work within the demands of the team.
- Maintain good work relations with all members of staff, and to promote effective teamwork.
- Participate in the regular review and update of the Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures as directed by the Departmental Manager or Senior BMS.
- Be responsible for the validation and release of abnormal laboratory results for the clinical care of patients in line with departmental policies and procedures.
- Interpret technical validity of laboratory results and take appropriate actions in line with departmental policies and procedures.
