Job Summary
The Lead Biomedical Scientist (LBMS) will play an important role within the Cyted UK laboratory, participating in all aspects of providing a histopathology service including specialist analytical testing on a range of biological samples. They will also line manage a number of Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLAs) and Laboratory Scientists (LS) staff members.
The role holder will report to the Deputy Laboratory Manager, with whom they will support and maintain high levels of communication.
LBMS will be responsible for processing patient samples in good time and will ensure that service standards for reporting results are achieved. The LBMS will be expected to prioritise their own workload and manage the workload of the more junior members of the team. They will supervise, mentor, develop and support the staff that they line manage. The role holder will be expected to maintain the highest standards of laboratory practice in line with HCPC and ISO 15189 policies.
Working Pattern and Location
This role is a full-time position with a standard 37.5 hour working week. However, the position could be filled through a job-sharing arrangement and there are opportunities to work flexibly.
You will be based at the Cyted Laboratory at 2 Falcon Road, Hinchingbrooke Business Park, Huntingdon, PE29 6FG. We actively encourage travel and working from our other business sites to ensure you get to meet the team and understand what the different areas of the business do. We will support you with transport if required.
What you will be doing
Technical
Undertake the technical work required for the clinical and research service, including all aspects of routine histopathology.- Responsibility for one or more processes or projects within the laboratory environment.
- Clinical specimen preparation and dissection (cut up) under guidelines laid down by The Royal College of Pathologists.
- Participate in all External Quality Assessment schemes.
- Entry of confidential patient data on LIMS and pathological reports and communication to Clinicians.
- Report potential stock/equipment shortages to Deputy Laboratory Manager.
- Implement company policies and procedures in relation to confidentiality, health and safety, COSHH, infection control, and all local safety rules regarding fire, chemical, and physical hazards.
- Preparation of data for presentation to management.
- Ensuring the laboratory meets the standards for the handling of clinical specimens in accordance with ISO 15189.
- Participate in preparing Standard Operating Procedures to comply with ISO 15189 and Health and Safety regulations.
- Ensure that the daily activities of the laboratory comply with the Human Tissue Act.
- Ensure that appropriate quality control is carried out for all techniques undertaken, and that sensitive information is secure, accurate and correctly backed up.
- Active participation in periodic internal audits.
Managerial
- Management of LSs and MLAs in their team including onboarding, appraisals, and in-service training.
Continuing Professional Development
- Undertake Continuing Professional Development required by the Health Care Professions Council.

Person Specification
- BSc or equivalent in a biological discipline
- Registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Practical experience working in a pathology laboratory
- Experience in cytological techniques
- Team and staff management
- Laboratory bench skills
- Ability to maintain good laboratory records
- Ability to organise and prioritise own workload and that of others
- Computer literacy, including word processing, spreadsheet and database management
- Knowledge of histopathology involving an understanding of relevant theory and/or principles of laboratory processes
- Understanding of Health and Safety Regulations, human tissue governance and how to apply them in the laboratory environment
- Excellent communication skills
